After being harped on for years by my wife (which never worked) my 9 year old daughter asked me if I would please stop using tobacco. She had been through some class in school and they talked about all the bad things that can happen by using tobacco. I told her I would set a \"quit-date\" and do it. set the date for November 1st.
I remember taking a dip on Halloween night while walking my daughter around the neighborhood and spit it out as we got back to the house. I had already purchased nicotine gum and regular gum as well as sunflower seeds and some sugar-free candies. I was prepared.
I tried my first chew when I was 12 years old, baseball season...by 13 I was stealing it from a local grocery store since I wasn\'t old enough to purchase. I turned 43 this year and realized tobacco has been a major part of my life for a very long time. Hell, I barely did anything without a dip in my lip...working, driving, fishing, hunting (I had to learn to elk call with a dip in), if I wasn\'t eating or sleeping I had a dip in my mouth.
November 1 was a Sunday. I happily chewed on some nicotine gum while we cleaned up the yard from the Halloween decorations. The next day at work came and went...after a couple weeks of the nicotine gum I decided to start weaning myself off so I\'d alternate nicotine gum and regular gum...next thing I knew I had gone a day without any nicotine...then another...then another.
It\'s been 47 days since I have had tobacco and 11 days since I\'ve had nicotine.
I hadn\'t ever really had a desire to quit before but hearing my daughter speak to me really hit home. She never nagged me, just asked politely and pleaded a case as to why I should try.
It has been surprisingly easy to stop the tobacco, a bit harder to stop the nicotine gum...but I believe I am over the hump. I believe I have licked that stupid habit.
My daughter had asked me to set a \"New Year\'s Resolution\". I figured by New Year\'s Day I\'ll be 61 days tobacco free and 25 days nicotine free. That\'s a hell of a jump start!
Go me!
