of your first elk hunt. my buddy is coming out for the first time this year. he calls an texts daily about everything, lol

I remember getting my new red-black plaid shirt. Mom made it special for hunting. I was sure proud of that shirt after the season, as I wore it to school. I remember going to bed with my rifle right beside me the night before the opener. It was hard to sleep that night. I remember gobbling down breakfast, because I was in such a hurry to get started. Yes I remember.

Last time it was me babysitting 4 newbies! I was like a gol\'darn den mother at a birthday party at the roller rink. My wife seriously grabbed my cell and threatened to throw it out the window two weeks before season.

To be honest. I\'ve never lost that feeling. I\'m like a little kid going on his first hunt everytime the elk season is close. I find it impossible to get sleep, and I have to take a couple of Tylenol PM\'s to get some sleep.

It was 1966 and my Dad had just died from lung cancer, I was 12 years old the first year I was able to pack a rifle after passing my hunters safety course. I remember him telling me to go kill him a bull, that was Sept. 22nd. He died Sept 24th. My 2 uncles took me hunting that year and I killed my first bull for my Dad, It was only a small spike, but it will be the biggest bad ass bull I will ever kill.

And your right Still Hunter, I hope I never do lose that feeling, when I do it will be time to quit hunting.

I\'m the same way Still Hunter.

I\'ve been pretty excited for about 9 months now. It reminds me of when I first started deer and turkey hunting. My parents would drop me off at my grandpa\'s house. We were up at 3 and grandma would be cooking breakfast. We would go out and feed and water the hogs and cattle, come back in to eat breakfast and then drive to the hills to hunt. No scent control back then, usually smelled like hogs because I was wearing my hunting clothes to work in. I sure do miss those days, I barely got any sleep. If it wasn\'t for my grandpa I would have never been a hunter, my dad didn\'t hunt and grandpa was the only person who would take me. He didn\'t baby me any though, when we got to the woods I was on my own. This whole process has made me feel a lot like I\'m I\'m a kid all over again!!! I\'ll be thinking about grandpa a lot when I\'m in the mountains though, I wonder what he would have thought about getting to see an elk or bear or hills as big as the Rockies!!!

After meeting a few fella\'s through this and other forums I\'m beginning to think I\'ve had an extreme privilege that I have taken for granted. See, I grew up in a hunting family, and I mean extended family. My first rifle deer hunt was shared with no less than 20 guys and gals, even though I am my parents only son. So all these aunts, uncles, cousins and friends that I deer hunted with were consistently asking if I could tag along on trips and hunts my Dad didn\'t even go on. My dad\'s oldest brother tagged my first deer, a doe, because I didn\'t have a doe tag. (Party hunting is legal in WI) My 60+ yr old aunt and would walk trail for grouse with me, me with a 20ga. and her with a .410 She killed a lot of birds, and probably could out wing shoot most of my friends if she would have shot a bigger gun.

As a kid, our lives revolved around hunting, because it was a necessity, not a hobby. Dad has a few quotes that describe it. \"Nothing better eaten in july than fresh sweet corn, new potatoes and fresh venison.\" and \"deer season is any month with an \"R\" in it like September, October, Jurne, Jurly, and Aurgust.\" And when they\'re \"red they\'re ready\".
