Rifle scope?

I need to change my eastern deer scope for a western elk scope. The outfitter told me shots in his area range out to 250 yds. Right now I have a 3x9 scope. What do you recommend?

Michael, I think that 3x9 scope will be just fine for shots out to 250 yards. What caliber are you shooting? What I would probably do is just zero your rifle at 200 yards and know that you can just aim and shoot at any distance out to 250+ yards, assuming you are shooting a normal big game caliber.

I agree with a 3x9 being good for a 250 yard shot and I think Derek is spot on with sighting in for 200.

I guess my question would be what brand of scope do you has right now?
If it\'s low quality then that may hinder a little.

If you are just wanting to replace your scope IMO the 3x9 scopes are just fine for hunting most any big game...

I even used a 4x for several years since all I used mind for was a aiming device and not a spotter or for looking for game...

My 7mm mag using 165 gr Federal Premium ammo will drop around 6\" at 300 yards if zeroed at 200 yards. Will be about 1.5\" high at 100 yards if zeroed at 200.

As for scope, I like Leupold and have a Vari X-III in 4.5x14 AO. Like others have said, the 3x9 will be fine unless maybe it\'s a small objective or not quite as good during low light conditions as you\'d want.

Best of luck on your hunt!

Your 3x9 will work just fine. Actually, I have a 2x7 on my 7MM. Why? Well, that is just what I happened to have laying around. It works just fine for any big game.

It\'s a Redfield. Just curious as to what power you guys keep it on to shoot?

Redfield will do great!
You will be a killer out to 300.

For me at 100 or less I am using minimum zoom, anything more and I am cranked out to my max.
That is just me though, not sure what everyone else uses.

I normally keep my 3x9 on 6.... Very seldom move it if at all... That\'s just me...

3-9 is perfectly fine.

i sight in 2.5\" high at 100 yards. IIRC, that gets me in the engine compartment of any western game at 300 yards.. 6\"low? 257 weatherby mag

To be more precise: 2x7 Redfield on my 7MM for deer & elk. 4x12 Leupold on my 220 Swift for prairiedogs. 3x9 Nikon on my 17 HMR for ground squirrels. They are only about 1 1/2 inches wide. So the 9x is needed on those little critters. 3x9 on my pellet rifle because that is what came with it. I also have an old, made in El Paso Weaver that was originally on the 7 MM when I bought it. It worked just fine on many deer and a few elk. But is now laying in the drawer collecting dust. Maybe someday I\'ll put in on my Henry .22.
