1st timer here, getting ready to head out west and looking for any info on using or renting SAT phones. Possibly be going solo and wondering if it's gonna be worth the money to spend for them - wife is freaking out...help. thanks.
its def worth it for solo even a group to have the ability to do so they are easy to come by online lots of places to rent one. i am looking at a delorme gps that you can bluetooth to your phone and email and text with also has an emergancy button if you get in a bad spot.
I have a SPOT I got at at half price, but haven't paid the registration yet for it. I'm getting a SAT phone but haven't looked at all the brands or models yet.
I carry an ACR PLB with me in case of an emergency. You can't send anything but a distress signal which will be picked up by military satellites and directed to the nearest search and rescue with your GPS coordinates. No subscription ever, you just register with NOAA. It has non replaceable batteries that are good for 5 years. You can send it in to get batteries replaced after that time. It is very small and light weight.
