Scraps and rubs?

As a whitetail hunter, I focus a lot on scraps and rubs. They tell a story and help my hunt them.

Do you all focus on scraps and rubs when it comes to elk? Or are they not as important to you?

This season I did find an area that was destroyed with fresh scrapes, rubs, and massacred saplings. It surrounded the mud hole I shot my massive, trophy class, Boone and crocket.... Spike.

However it\'s also where I saw the 4 other bulls.

Was this a fluke or does sign tell that same story as it would with WT

The key with rubs is to know the difference between a velvet rub and rut rubs. Not sure of their official title, but that\'s what I call them.

Velvet Rubs = :downthumb:
Rut Rubs = :upthumb:

From my experience, if you find a velvet rub the bulls have probably already migrated to the cows. How far that is, just depends.

Rut rubs are the best. Find one, come back during night or morning dark and give a contact bugle. :upthumb:

The only wallows of interest to me are the ones used that day.

My 2-cents!

I like finding rubs.
It seems the areas I do find them the ok have made quite a few of them and that tell me the like are comfortable in that spot.
I have several GPS waypoints that are rub locations.
I swing thru them each year, make some calls and see what happens.

Wallows, same idea

These may be the same, but what are your opinions?>

Velvet doesn\'t stay on very long. The rubs right after it comes off may be \'frustration\' rubs more than RUT rubs, just due to the timing

Velvet?

The second picture looks more like a hungry porcupine than a rub.

Ha, certainly possible. It was in a line with the other two and about 10 more besides that. Just grouped it in with the pictures.

Fresh rubs along with old ones tells me elk like to hang around there. A line of rubs tells me a bull or bulls pass by there. The more rubs in a line the more times the bull has passed through that area. Usually I have found the line of rubs goes from a bedding area to water. An isolated rub does not interest me much. I will look to see if there are more around. I don\'t particularly try to interpret rubs. I check to see how fresh they are. I also get a general idea of size of bull, but it is not absolute.
I agree with WW; the second picture does not look like a rub.
