Two of the hardest things that I know of! I live in a small town so we don\'t have a workout center where a bunch of people go and push each other and get a kick ass workout. I have just about everything in my basement to do whatever I need too do to stay fit. But man, when I\'m the only one going down their day after day it starts getting harder and harder too stay with it. I can\'t seem to get anybody else that wants to hunt elk year after year like I want to and try too stay fit year around. Not even talking about life getting in the way, that\'s a whole other subject. Anybody else have this problem and maybe some tips and tricks too keep it going?

Yeah, I\'m the lone ranger when it comes to my workouts as well. I\'m fortunate to have a treadmill in my office, I ruck up and walk/run it daily on grades. I do several hundred pushups and crunches throughout the workday as well.

I just try to focus on what a bi**ch it\'s gonna be with 80 pounds of elk on my back coming out of the sh**hole :downthumb:

It\'s motivation enough :D

They say that having someone to workout with is good for compliance with a regimen.

I think \"they\" are wrong. The only one you can depend on is YOU. (for hunting, exercising, whatever. Cynical? Sure. But true.)

I have to get up at 4:50 4 days a week to workout ... and exercise 2 other days at other times ... and generally take one day \"off\" which still means doing something active ... riding, working outdoors, trimming horse feet, cc-skiing, hiking, etc.

For me, having a calendar and a time for workouts is what works.

March 25, 2014, for example, was: \"Get up at 4:50 ... put P90x3 \"The Challenge\" in ... push play ... do what you\'re told.\" You need to have a plan, or sticking to \"it\" will be tough, because there is no \"it\" to stick to.

A plan is critical. For me, DVDs work well. But if you are not a DVD-type-guy, then still sit down with a calendar and write it down. Writing down your plans (exercise, financial, whatever) is the best way to make sure your goals come true. The World will fill up your days with all kinds of crap if you don\'t, and you can\'t do it \"on the fly\" ... planning is critical.

I\'m a creature of habit, and you are, too. A plan will become a habit.

Unfortunately, us creatures of habit get both the good and the bad habits!

What\'s that saying? \"Be careful because your thoughts become your words, and your words become your actions, and your actions become your habits, and your habits become your character.\" (Maybe a bit deep for this discussion   )

One thing that has really helped me is my kids grew up and moved away. I can now have a somewhat consistent schedule. I don\'t think I could ever have kept up a decent exercise program while the kids were home. It was catch-as-catch-can for exercise back in those days! I was fatter each year. Those boys were nearly the end of me. But seriously, sometimes there really are things more important than your own health. Trying to fit exercise in when there are more important things just won\'t work.

And one more thing ... have your own goals, not someone else\'s. I haven\'t made a lot of progress with my workouts for a while, and I don\'t care ... I\'m where I want to be with that, and I have other things to work on.

john, are you really that old :D I have three boys myself 8, almost 7 and almost 6 ;)

I\'ve got a 28 year-old and a 19 year-old ... I\'ve earned by cynicism! Just kidding (gin).

i jog or ride a bike daily.

it is to the point that if i miss, i feel guilty. i am a much stronger hiker. much stronger!! this past weekend i did yardwork. i had to tear up some drip irrigation and install a better system..up and down, crouching, crawling, fetal position under small tree..you name it, i had to do that position. it was awful.

today is wed, and i havent really exercised since. i have never been that sore before. my hamstrings and abs especially. it got me thinking..i need to work out! hit the gym and lift weights. i think i just need to be \"all-over\" stronger. yuck.

I feel ya Cliff. I had to install a jet pump on my property, in a little pumphouse made for midgets last Saturday. I couldn\'t sit in it without bending over. My low back was seriously talking to me after about 3 hours of dinking around in there.

Made myself pack up that evening, and walked about a 5 mountain mile round trip to try to roost some turkeys for my Son. Back felt good the next day :)

Im at the same difficult time.
Daughter is at college, son a junior is HS.
He is so busy with homework, hockey and a girlfriend that I am now missing my \'pals\' that always went with me.

Weather is starting break now and sitting around aint gonna cut it anymore.
Self motivation and dedication here I come

Finding another elk hunter to work out with could be difficult. Finding someone to workout with that wants to just stay in shape, or add some muscle gives you a bigger pool to draw from.

Things just keep getting better. Just smashed my finger on my left hand at work yesterday. I\'m sure it will be at least 3 weeks before its fully functional again.

Middle one?

Yeah, it happens to me all the time. Guess I should quit showing it to people.

close, ring finger and just caught middle one. Ring finger got hammered hard had too cut off wedding ring today after lunch.

Yikes :wtf:

Hope the swelling goes down quickly!

I get so frustrated with the guys I hunt with. They forgot they were sucking pine needles off the forest floor packing an elk out but when we had our application meeting none of them were serious about working out. I can\'t get them motivated and I need them to pack my elk out. it\'s just not fair.

They\'ll remember soon enough
