Are there any shed hunters on this forum? I'm heading out to CO in late March or early April to see what I can find. Have to first check for elk sheds here in northern WI first.

I can't wait to get out shed hunting it's been a long winter!

I used to look for sheds all the time. Then around 2007-08 it seemed like everybody and there brother got into it. Everywhere I would go I would see boot tracks and people. People would be going out earlier and earlier and chasing animals around on there wintering ranges trying to be the first ones to find an antler or trying to locate animals and running them to see if there antlers would fall off. It got to be like a competition. I liked hiking around and scouting and if I found an antler that was cool but it wasn't the real reason I was there.

I still go occasionally but its mostly something I do while scouting new areas later in the spring. It feels like my days of shed hunting trips are over.

I was actually out in my shop yesterday having to move a pile of antlers around to get to something and wondering what I was going to do with them and wondering why I still have them. I guess I cant bring myself to sell them.

Couple questions, When should I start looking for sheds? Is there a good altitude to stick to or can I go to where I would go hunting to look for them or would that be too high.

Every year is different, last year I happened to be in Colorado in late March and went shed hunting with a friend.  The mule deer had dropped, but a lot of elk were still packing antlers.  It was a mild winter last year I think they drop higher, later and less concentrated.  Those are all theories though sheds are where you find them.  Start covering ground and take note of elevations where you find them.  I have days that I cover 10+ miles and don't find a shed.

As far as times to look for sheds in my area the moose and whitetails drop around the end of December beginning of January, the mulies drop around early February, and the elk drop around mid to late March. I have seen lots of animals that hold on to there antlers way longer or drop way sooner than that but those seem to be the average times.

As far as elevation to look it depends on the snow pack in my area. We had a good amount of snow this year so I would look for moose and deer sheds lower on the mountain than in previous years. I would pay attention to snow levels in another month to get an idea where the elk are going to be. The bulls seem to want to be as high as they can be and still feed.

Looks like Utah and some units in Co have a shed ban on for public lands because of the heavy snowfall. I know Utah is April 1 when you can start looking.
