i was dead set on shooting my Wtby 257 magnum. then i remembered Ca is a lead free zone. (dont start )
so i went into the back of the gun safe and brought out my old 30.06. buying lead free ammo from a store is easy for the \'06. the Wtby needs mail order. i picked up two boxes of Hornaday GMX 150\'s. i had no idea where my rifle is hitting especially with the new ammo. my brother lent the rifle to a cop buddy..so dunno. i do know it was spotlessly clean. i cleaned it again and lightly oiled it.
friday, i had some time. i waved bye to the boss at noon and went to the gun range. our range is dilapidated and run my some old grizzled crotchety range master.. big booming voice. there were a free people there..
i felt out of place. it has been a long time since i pulled a trigger on a rifle. 2007. my last bullet did drop a bull elk, so i at least ended it on a HIGH NOTE. range was HOT, so i took the time to settle in my bench. they had these horrible wooden mini saw horses they used as \"Sandbags\". i flipped on on the side and covered it with carpet scraps i found in a pile. i settled in behind my scope and found myself rock steady. i look around and everyone is running for carpet to copy me. hahah.
range went cold and i went downrange to duct tape my targets to the boards. they were soaked from recent rains so my tape jobs was suspect at best. i put up three targets, the sighting in type. back at the bench, one target already had fallen off. i kicked myself for forgetting a staple gun and not realizing the range master had one. DUH!. whatever. RANGE HOT!! the guy next to me mysteriously takes off his scope from his 30.06 and starts sending bullets down range without the bench. huh? i ignore him and settle in to find out where my bullets are going to go. BOOM! 3\" high 1\" left. i fire two more times and clover leaf a group. WHAT!??
i pull off the scope caps and stare. haha..i forgot what to do! shooting archery full time erased my gun/scope knowledge. i was about to google it right there on the spot when the range guy reads my mind and tells me..\"you need 4 clicks to the...\". click click click click. i fire two more bullets and leave them hitting 3\" high and going down the middle. range goes COLD. i clean up downrange, pack up and go home.
i have forgotten how fun shooting is!! now i want a hunting AR platform. maybe an AR-30 (that is the 308 version right?) vowing to go 100% archery was fun while it lasted. now i have taken a few arrow animals, i am willing to mix up the tools.
