boy o boy. i was scared. i\'m leaving in a week for deer archery. the past three days - SCARY. my right shoulder (my bowstring side) has been so sore. so sore that if i need to change the radio station, i would reach out with my left hand. it hurt to lift it.

couple of Aleve. and more importantly..shoulder lubrication exercises. thought i would share. my PT guy showed me this move and i kept it forever. i use a 5lb dumb-bell. just grabbed the ones my wife never uses. :)

hold it in your hand. bend at the waist so you are facing towards the ground. just let the bad arm/shoulder dangle holding that light weight. then let it pendulum in nice smooth circles. counter clockwise for 30 seconds...gently stop it and go clockwise. 30 seconds. i was told the weight allows the shoulder joint to separate painlessly and the motion \"lubricates\" the joint. i have been NOT bow practicing..and been doing this. i can move my shoulder now with very little pain. i only took 2 Aleve last night.

i\'m not going to shoot much anymore until my hunt. i\'m accurate, my form is solid. i need pain free shoulders. getting old blows!!

anymore PT tips?

Thanks I will have to try that. I have been fighting a shoulder out of place since October. I am doing push ups almost daily and they fire it up. I have gone to the chiro for it for 2 months. Been twice this week. It did feel better when he stretched it a bit. Mine hurts to put it on the steering wheel of the car and then to turn Ouch! I have been fighting through the pain. I wish it would go away.

Oh yeah I hear ya.
I have had pain in my shoulders too

This past fall I had a ladder stand get away from me when I was moving it to a nearby tree
I went to my Dr and I got a refferal for some PT which included \'dry needling \'
(Not acupuncture )

I have had this before and it works well.
Insurance covered it.

Sure Cliff, we all believe you...it\'s your wife\'s 5lb dumbbell

Seriously though, I appreciate the tip. I\'m going to have to try that out...been getting a little sore here and there with the new bow.

What is embarrassing is my kettle bell. Mine is 15 lbs. now that might just be not for men. At least my form is pristine. :)

Shoulders are tough ... complex joint. Lubing up like you did is about the only thing to do before your hunt, other than, perhaps, some anti-inflammatory injection. Long-term, I\'d take it as a sign that you need to work on making your shoulder stronger.

Yeah, I am a relatively strong guy so I\'ve been surprised at how sore I\'ve gotten from the new bow. It seems to work some very different muscle groups, out towards the outside edge of the shoulder bone from what I\'ve noticed. In all the years I was hitting it hard in the gym, I don\'t recall ever being sore in this same spot. Hopefully it keeps getting stronger and better. Only flung about 90 arrows yesterday :D

I had arthroscopic surgery on my shoulder in college. One of the PT exercises to help get my shoulder stronger helped me get it back to normal and I still use this frequently when I tweak my shoulders (doing it now as a matter of fact!).

Try without weight first and then maybe your 5lb pink weight  , or something weighing less if it is painful.

Lie flat on your back for the 3 exercises below:

Exercise A: keep your arm close your side. Bend your elbow so that your forearm and fingers are pointing to the ceiling. Orient your palm so that it is facing toward your body. Now rotate you forearm towards the floor and eventually touch the floor with the back of your hand. Bring your forearm back up the start position. This is one rep. Be mindful to keep your forearm at a right angle to your upper arm, and keep your upper arm close to your body. Again try without weight first and then slowly work your way up with weight to strengthen your shoulder.

Exercise B: put your arm out strait out from your body to form a 90 degree angle. Keep your humerus/bicep arm on the floor and maintain this right angle to your body throughout the movement (Same for exercise C below). Bend your elbow again to bring your forearm to a right angle to your bicep arm, and your forearm will be pointing towards the ceiling. Now orient your palm so that when you lower your forearm to the ground, your palm will touch the ground. Try to maintain the 90 degree angles and bring your forearm back to the start position slowly.

Exercise C: Same as B above except rotate to the other side. When you rotate and lower your forearm, the back of your hand will now touch the ground. Rotate your forearm to return to the start position.

Do these fairly slowly and controlled. I tweaked my shoulder in October, so I do two sets of each of the 3 exercises on each arm. One set on each arm with an 8lb weight then move up to a 12lb weight. These exercises help my shoulders gain strength and range of motion. If my explanation doesn\'t make sense, PM me your phone # and I\'ll try to explain it better!

Good luck with the rehab and on your hunt! Roman

My wife had a really bad shoulder. The X ray showed a large bone spur that was cutting into the cup and muscle. The Ortho wanted to operate. But she opted to try the dry needle that Brad mentioned along with some PT. She is good as new now. I\'m going in for an evaluation to see if the dry needle might work for me. Too much abuse and wild broncs back in my younger days.

My middle son is a college baseball player (catcher) and after catching 50 + games in a season his shoulder really starts to bother him. He goes through all the PT, works with the trainers and gets through it. Last year he started drinking Joint Juice. I picked up a case from Sam\'s Club and he drank one every morning and said after a couple weeks it was incredible. This stuff has glucosamine and chondroitin and lubricates the joints in your body.

What is glucosamine?
Glucosamine occurs naturally in your body. We tend to produce less as we age and therefore supplementing with daily glucosamine has been shown effective in maintaining healthy joint cartilage.*

What is chondroitin?
Chondroitin is a major constituent of healthy cartilage. Taking chondroitin combined with glucosamine supports joint function and mobility.*
