The weather where I hunt ranges in temps from 15-50 degrees.  I see many people suggest the mt pants and 90% jacket as the standard gear to purchase.  Lower temps are my concern trying to extend their use in to late season.  Should I look to heavier jacket or will layering be sufficient?

Thank you in advance for your response and any help you can provide.

my september/october setup is Ascent pants with a really light merino wool base layer bottom, a spandex shorts sleeve top and a long sleeve merino base layer top.  keeps me comfortable from 15* to about 60*.    i keep a puffy jacket in my daypack.

I have most of Sitka's Open Country line up but really only wear a few pieces.  If you going down to 15 degrees, I would go with the timberline pants, just a burlier version of the mountain pants.  The waterproof seat and knees really work great for my needs, especially when paired with gaiters.  The 90% jacket is great 90% of the time, and I always have a balaclava in my pack to keep the wind off my neck.  I also have the traverse top and wear it every day during big game season here in Montana (with or without my jacket).  Depending on the weather I'll also add a pair of under armor cold gear tights/top.  I can hunt like this in temps down to 15 pretty comfortably, but I'm hiking all day.  If temps drop, I'll wear my 90% pants and add the Kelvin vest to my pack.

Another important factor to consider is the rain.  Neither the timberline pants/90% jacket are waterproof.  Regardless of weather, I always have my cloudburst pants/jacket with me.  My hunting partner and I often joke that our cloudburst pants & jacket should be called 90% because it seems like we're always wearing them.  Hope this helps.

layering is best all around brother like the said 90% is the name of the gear so as long as you have gear in your pack for the other (20% because lets face it there is no 100% its 110% in pursuit of elk). you should be fine
