I was in Montana last week on my first elk hunt and shot a nice 6x6.  10 minutes after I shot him it started snowing and snowed 4 inches in the next 1/2 hour.  Not being able to find my arrow or any blood because the snow had the ground covered pretty good we just started walking in a grid around the area but never could find him.  Has anyone ever had this happen to them?  What do you do?  The best part is the next morning we went back in there to look for him some more and the other bull in the group was still in there bugling.  We got in on him and my buddy missed him at 21 yards.  Hit a twig.  He was the biggest bull we saw all week.  Maybe a 330 6x6.  Instead of coming home with 2 6x6 bulls we came home empty handed!!!

where'd you guys end up, the snowcrests or gravelly's?  how'd the burn area look or, did you guys even get in there?

Sorry you couldn't find your bull. I had the same outcome friday morning, without the snow. got in close to a herd bull, had 4 other sattelite bulls buglin and skirting the herd. I got within 40 yds of a 6x6 and a 4x5 fighting (first experience with that, awesome). they quit fighting and the 6x6 walked past at 35 yds and I stuck him, he dropped a little but the hit looked good. He ran about 20 yds and stopped but then the 4x5, seeing him run, came flyin out of the brush and chased him down the trail. I had good blood, some with bubbles in it, for about 100yds then nothing. I looked for about 2 hrs on my own (solo hunter), then went back and got a friend to come up with his dog and look for 3 more hrs, no luck! went back again with my wife and my dog and looked for about an hr. no such luck! Im bummed, makes me sick everytime I think about it. The only thing I can do now is wait for the ravens and turkey vultures to give up it's location.

Yeah, went back up sunday afternoon to look some more, busted 3 bulls and a few cows out of there. They were below me but must've skylined me as I came over the top. No ravens or turkey vultures flyin overhead, so maybe that bull is still alive? One more weekend AWHunt, better "git r done", good luck with the rest of your season.

i am definitely going out again this weekend hopefully going to stay out over night, need to find kid sitter for Sat and Sun. But I will be out there searching for the suckers.

Same happened to me Thursday evening.  I placed a nice heart shot at 60 yards on a bull, who walked away slowly like he was in shock.  Found good blood for about 40-50 yards, but lost it in the dark.  Came back the next morning to a fresh blanket of snow and couldn't see any blood.  We paced a grid along the slope where we expected him to be pile up, but just couldnt find him.  Gut-wrenching feeling.
