Anybody getting concerned about the deer and elk herds yet? \'Y understanding is that the hard crust is what gets them...mostly deer. Doesn\'t sound like we\'ve had any of that yet, but I was up at keystone today and there were a ton of elk around Dillon.

Its a rare amount so early and so short amount of time.
Yep, the deer/elk usually suffer in late winter, Feb/Mar when the snow thaws and then freezes creating a crust they cant dig thru.
But with all this snow it could come earlier for sure

Just think of the run off! And it wont be until June til we can get up to scout!

Who\'s getting snow? We haven\'t gotten much at all around Colorado Springs. Other than the latest dump in the mountains, I didn\'t think the ski areas had much yet either. Guess I need to get out more!

Some impressive snow amounts for sure!

lol Russ! The ski parks have been getting pounded. Keystone has more snow for the month of January than the last 5 years and it\'s only the 12th.

Wow...that\'s unreal!

I plan on burning my points in CO 76 this year on a archery hunt. Just had a couple people mention that I should watch the snow closely this year and then I see this thread.

So how would I know how bad this may or may not have hurt the herd? Any advice on this would be great

Don
The CPW will do their herd counts in Feb/Mar and Im sure there will be some chatter about that time

Brad,

Perfect!! Thanks for the insight and advice.

Just want to check the whole situation over before I burn my 16 points.

I saw a thread on rockslide talking about a guy trying to raise money for the gunnison herds. Supposedly the snow has already buried the sage brush. Not sure what the biologists are saying but it sounds like some people are starting to get concerned. Hopefully we get a decent melt soon but I think there\'s more snow coming.

Lots of snow in the high country for sure! Elk and deer are all on those south aspects up here, and as low as possible.
