Let\'s talk about solo tactics ... I\'m all ears. Not much advice to offer from me, since I have yet to make it work.

The focus of a bull on a caller makes being a caller and shooter an issue.

I hear what you are saying John. A lot of truth to it! One of the big things to think about is you setup when you are hunting solo. Try to be in an area where he has to come looking for you. If he has to look, chances are he\'ll come closer in order to find you. Also, a decoy can be helpful sometimes. I used to hang a burlap gunny sack in a tree. Burlap is about the same color as an elk and it can distract his attention away from you. This year I may try one of Jeff\'s elk butt decoys from Elkmountain gear. It\'s a lot lighter and more compact that a gunny sack.

Another trick is learn how to direct traffic. Learn to cast sounds away from you. When he gets close, point your bugle behind you and hold your hand over the end of it to muffle the sound. This will make him think you are 50 yards farther away. Beats the heck out of calling and running up 50 yards and possibly getting caught moving.

ChuckarNUT was standing 10\' from me when he killed his 5 point last year. I called it in, but he got his arrow knocked first. :D So my advice is to be aggresive and inventive.

Brians bull for example, I used the restless herd sequence but added a twist. There was several bulls buling from a general area and possible 1 or 2 were herd bulls. Long story short, I ran the sequence then started heading away while giving cow calls. The impression, a cow had seperated from the restless herd. This forced the bull to come in silently and quickly to try and hook this cow away before she rejoined .

Be aggresive, inventive, and paint the picture in the bulls mind.

Just my 2-cents.

Of course you know what i\'m going to say. If calling is an issue. Don\'t call. Go to the bull instead of trying to trick it into thinking you\'re another bull, or cow. As a bow hunter it\'s much easier for you to find a bull without calling. They\'re vocal on their own. When you hear one. Don\'t bring it to you. Go to it. Sneak. It\'s fun and rewarding.

pete, I hope that our new spot in Idaho proves that to be true. I have only stumbled upon 1 herd of cows that I actually heard. otherwise I have only heard them pass through without making a peep. I know that our area in Colorado had easy access to campers and hikers. other hunters weren\'t too bad. but anyway, the elk definitely acted as pressured elk would do. very quiet.....

That can make it tougher, but I have to ask. If the bulls are being that quiet. Will they come to a human calling? Also, if hunters are calling to the elk you must be hearing those calls. How do you know it\'s not elk you\'re hearing?

I haven\'t called much while there the last 2 years. I haven\'t really utilized the cold calling set up until last year. first set up last year resulted in a bull raking some trees 100 yards away just into some timber. it was a bad set up and he eventually came around us and caught our wind. so I used it a couple of more times and hear animals coming in but hanging up, also bad set ups. I have heard other hunters bugling, there was definitely no mistaking them as hunters. especially when they were bugling every 10 minutes from 12-2.....
