Here in WI we can only spear for pan fish and rough fish. I don\'t kill anything I don\'t eat so it\'s pan fish for me.
We are spearing in water less that 12\' as that\'s about as far as I can dive with the equipment I have. Just using a snorkel, mast, fins and wet suit. We use an orange colored float with a flag for safety. I use both a pole spear and a band powered gun. The range of the pole spear is about the length of the pole and with the gun it\'s about 10\'.
We spear both Lake Michigan and the smaller inland lakes. This time of year the pannies are on or near the spawning beds and we are selective in trying to take only the fish that are not on the beds. There is no \"catch and release\" in spear fishing so we have to be sure of our target.
The water temps are in the mid 50\'s to low 60\'s now and we can stay in the water up to 3-4 hours without getting a chill with the wet suits we are using.
Here are a couple of pics of the typical Perch we get in Lake Michigan later in the year.
If it\'s legal in your state, I suggest giving it a try. It\'s a real hoot.
