Spot and stalk or call em in?

I like to cow call those silent bulls early in the season and have limited luck spot and stalking...what about you?

I have never called before because I was hunting with a rifle outside the rut.  Planning to try this year since I'll be attempting to kill an elk with a carbon fiber stick.

What advice can you give someone new to calling?

I will be doing a little of both this year. its my first time so im trying both sides of the fence. not sure what will work best for me yet.

My first time out archery hunting elk we were able to spot them, set up - not in the direction that they were heading, could not get that far over - then used a "Heads up Decoy" and cow calling. I set up about 50 yards in front of my hunting partner as he called and used the decoy. We turned the elk to come our way and it all worked perfectly. Except for my shot, it was low right under by inches. Very encouraging, educational and it cleared out my arteries of any debris.  ;)

Make noise! Sound like an elk, I like to set up and call next to a tree with a ton of dead branches...as I call I stomp and break them and rake the trees.  The louder the better. It tends to get bulls attention and they will come check out who is near them.

I hunted in an area last year that was wide open.  The call wasn't working like it normally does.  I finally just watched them feed into an area and then waited in afternoon for them to feed out.  It all depends on the cover, etc for the calling.  If they are actively calling, and you have cover, go for it!

In heavy timber places I use the call a lot to locate and call em in.  You could wonder for days trying to "sneak up" on an elk or find one. In semi open country I would use both.
