So, being a complete newbie here,

How does the Tenzing 5000 backpack carry a hind quarter of elk??

Or how good is it for packing meat??  And how does this type of
pack carry meat??  I understand how its down with a frame only.

Thanks,

Hey Dagwood!

Ty is correct, the TZ5000 carries the meat between the main pack compartment and the frame in a "zipped up" meat compartment that stays hidden until it's needed. As far as its' ability to haul the heavier loads...it is great. It handled a quarter and all our gear last fall....probably just over 100 lbs. Plus it compacts down nicely and at 7 lbs, it works great for day hunting on bivy hunts as well. Here is a video review of the pack:

I just got the Tenzing 6000 and I had the same question. I know how the pack works. It would have to be a small elk to fit a hind quarter (not de-boned) in the meat packing compartment.

Can you tell me if you have tried sliding a hind quarter in to the main compartment?

Mace375,

No, the Tenzing packs won't carry a bone-in hind quarter in the meat hauling compartment. You'll need to either bone the hind quarter out, or strap it to the outside of the pack. I opt to bone it out.
