The \'October Lull\'

It seems I have experienced seeing a few deer early October then nothing much until the last week. Every day closer to November is better. I like hunting on Holloween. Last year I saw my biggest buck of the season on November 1st.
I don\'t know what causes it but mid October can be slow sometimes.

In my experience the bigger bucks just aren\'t moving as much.
Their movement is more limited. Almost like their reserving their energy for what is coming.

I usually find it third week up until maybe the 29th or 30th of Oct.
Then it\'s game on!

I see no drop in doe movement during this time though.

I have found that the \"October Lull\" and October full moon will make you think twice about deer hunting in general...

99% of our trail cam pictures since the start of the \"Lull\" the 2nd week in October have been night pics... Thus leading me to believe the full moon in October is tough hunting... :( :(

I have seen some and shot a couple good bucks in the middle of Oct. but these were in areas with NO human pressure. Pressure toward the end of Oct means little because the bucks move around so much and earlier the bucks I encounter are first time in type hunts. If possible I leave areas alone and save them to hunt later, and I\'m sure it keeps my deer sightings up in mid Oct. I also get more aggressive in mid Oct, pushing in to bedding areas because I have learned that if you wait, that buck will be gone looking for does and you won\'t get another opportunity. My credo is \"the best time to hunt is right now\" and just be smart about location and approach.

All deer still have to eat and sleep. Hunting is definitely easier before and after the middle of Oct but the deer are still there so there is no reason to skip hunting. Guys in NW WI are seeing mature bucks chasing does from Oct 10-17 this year. I know of two 150\"ish bucks shot by bowhunters that were dogging does.

I didn\'t see any bucks chasing does but my oldest son and oldest grand son did on opening day of our muzzle loader season, Oct 17th... That is pretty early but on Oct 20, 2012 I killed a pretty good dark antlered 10 point \"following\" a doe... It was almost like he had caught her and they were staying together wait for her to \"get ready\"...

Here\'s a pic of him... We don\'t see many dark antlered bucks in out area...

The buck I shot the 17th was checking out three does and a fawn that were by my stand. A guy I work with saw a nice buck chasing a doe across a hay field this morning on his way to work. It\'s starting early this year.

October is usually not good until the last week and then only if the weather is cool. It has been warm most of the month here in southern Missouri and I\'ve seen little day time activity when I\'ve hunted. It should pick up any day! If we get cooler weather and frost earlier in the month it seems to get the deer on their feet more during the day.

Steven, that post of yours fits the area I live exactly and they have started to move the last few days.

Still sitting in my stand and apparently these deer don\'t know the October lull is supposed to be over! :problem:

I stand corrected! As soon as I hit submit a buck chases a doe by in the brush above me. Not sure on his size, too far but it\'s about time!

I just love the hours between 10 AM and 12 noon... :D :D

One of these days I\'m going to sleep in and get in my stand at 9 AM or so and find out what I\'m missing between 12 noon and 3 PM...

Cause I really hate hunting in the afternoon (even though I kill a lot of deer in those times)... But I rather be gaining daylight that loosing it...:shh: :shh:
