Does anyone here not pay attention to the thermals?
If you do, are you trying to kill your elk before the thermals change?

Do you guys move once the thermals start changing?

I am just trying to get a better idea of what I am getting into hunting mountains/thermals.

i will admit it. i dont understand thermals an dont pay alot of attention to them. should i, absolutely. will it cost me, absolutely

A couple of months or so ago, there was a very good discussion on thermals. Maybe we can get John to locate it and possibly place it in the Archived Tips. Watta ya think John?

Dan
Thermals are a huge part of my hunting strategy.
I have a place where it takes me 3 miles out of my way to get the morning thermals just right to hunt it.

Here is a post that WW mentioned

Let us know if you have any questions !

Found a thread on Understanding Mountain Thermals. It\'s now in the archives.

Thanks for the threads, I will look into them and post any additional questions I might have if those threads don\'t answer.

How often are you checking thermals with your wind checkers?
As often as you would for winds?

I could guess I check the wind about every 5 minutes

Me too. I sort of try to plan my daily itinerary around the switching of the thermals. When the wind gets swirly (often mid-morning when the thermals start to shift), I will lay low and not move. I try to move only when I have a positive wind.

If those plans get hosed by elk, it was a great day! :D

My kids gave me a bottle of this for Fathers Day.
I typically use the regular stuff so Im curious to give this a try

I\'ve been looking at the \"Moccasin Joe? Low-Light Smoke? Wind Indicator\" and will probably get some, but someone on here had a great idea(I forget who) to tie a tiny piece of thread to their bow to always be watching winds. I don\'t know if that could help with the thermals....

The low light smoke works good. It stays in the air for several feet so you can see what the thermal is doing.
I think WW uses the string
