I voted no.

To me, being a solid hunter means you need to be flexible and you must be able to adapt.
I\'d rather the X amount of time hunting. If day one of hunting needs to be my \"acclimation day/scout day\" then so be it.

I voted yes.

We have one area that is really open and we have sat and glassed for up to three days before hunting just to figure out travel patterns.

I also voted NO !!

I scout while hunting all season plus scout before the season where and when I can !!

If your note scouting and marking things on your GPS for next season while your out hunting, You\'ll be missing the bigger picture for the next season. Found rubs and wallows and watering holes ect !! That\'s what your looking for.

Also voted no. Every day I\'m hunting it\'s somewhat of a scouting adventure. I try to learn more about an area every day I\'m in the woods. What better time to \'scout\' than during the season?

Nope. No scouting for me. I do not have that luxury due to time off schedules. I just go up and \'get er done.\'

Back when I was elk hunting I always added extra days to the front end of my hunt but that\'s a flatlander going to altitude and I just enjoyed being in the mountains as much as I could...

Coming from the flat country, I just don\'t have that option. Having said that, when I was serious about chasing WTs I would sacrifice a day of hunting for scouting. I never used trail cameras back then though.

No. Even if I lived near elk country, I wouldn\'t use a day of vacation for scouting. I\'d save it for hunting.

i scouted with a bow in my hands, during hunting season. good points to both views though

I guess it depends. If I\'m in an area I like then I have no problem Scouting while hunting. But I am not there yet so I need to scout to find areas to hunt. It doesn\'t hurt that I am now in Colorado so I can head up for a day of scouting during the weekend.

Not a chance. I pretty much know where my elk hang out. They have been there for over 30 years without fail. If your area has everything elk require, they will be there.

I\'m not trying to bash rifle hunters, but I will tell you what I see every year. I live in a very popular hunting area. As a matter of fact, my home town bills itself as (The Elk Hunting Capital Of The World) :dk:

Every year I see the hunters flock into the area 4-5 days ahead of the up coming rifle season. They all feel the need to scout out their area. I\'m talking huge numbers of hunters swarming the woods just ahead of the season opener. I\'m not kidding you one bit when I say it is a sea of orange around here. Then when the season finally does open, they all wonder where the elk went to. Hey! Elk aren\'t stupid!

If you must scout early, be smart about it. :wtf:

I voted yes for years I don\'t draw - no if I draw the unit I am already familiar with. Working on getting that familiar on several OTC areas, once accomplished it will be no across the board.

What do I need to do to see the vote count? Same with the last poll, I voted but could not see results...

I have the same issue as Stoneman - I can never see the vote results when I cast my votes.

I voted yes - but with a caveat. For OTC CO elk areas that I know, then no I do not need to scout. Any new areas, I do want to scout to get an idea of what the area is like.

For special draws, I definitely will give up hunting time to scout. For my moose tag this year, I already went up once to scout once this month, and will do as many trips up as I can over the next few months to get a good feel for that unit. I know 2 areas for my mountain goat hunt (I previously helped my buddy scout and hunt for a total of 1.5 weeks), but will do two scouting trips to that unit to look into another drainage for a 3rd option.

I did a lot of scouting to get my big buck. I scouted many different drainages and it would have been really difficult to just pack in 5-6 miles and hope there were some bucks in an area I found on a map.

Next year I should draw my long sought after elk tag and will have the same mentality to walk, glass and get familiar with the country on scouting trips.
