tree stand hunting for elk

I have bow hunted elk for many years now and the old knees and legs aren\'t what they use to be. So I\'m looking into tree stand hunting, I have hunted out of them a few times in the past, but I would always feel like I wasn\'t really hunting just waiting. Since I can\'t travel the hills like I use too I want to give it another try. I know location of your stand is the most important thing. So I was just wanting some input from other stand hunters out there. So just to keep it simple what are three of the main things beside location I should be looking at ?

Location is number one. I start with map and Google Earth research. I started looking at a new area this year, and probably spent 40 hours going over the area of consideration. On the ground verification is critical. Find places that gets the most elk use. isolated water holes and springs near bedding areas are a great place to start.
I believe tree stand placement and height are number two. Try to be in a place and high enough to avoid the negative effects on slight down drafts and swirling winds. I go 25-30 feet for most of my stands. Also try to place yourself where the elk won\'t see you if they come form above or from a distance. They can see things that are totally out of place, and they can spot movement if you are not careful. They don\'t look up much, so you are dealing with their peripheral vision if they are below you. I prefer to be up in or next to the tree canopy.
Number three I would say is access. Find a path to your stand that does not send your scent through the elk area when you access or leave your stand(s).

Best Wishes, and let us know how you do.

You will enjoy it. I am reading it right now and have picked up many good tips, even though I am not stand-hunting this year. I will implement some of the tips for ground blinds and ambush points though. It truly is a good read.
