Went up and did some elk recon. Checked some stands and set cameras

Tried to get into to one of my areas but got tired of cutting trees that were across the road, so I parked and hiked the rest of the way

Went over to another area

Its nice to see the MD population coming back.
They got hit hard in 2007 and finally now seeing some decent numbers

That gets me excited!!!! :upthumb:

What are you looking for to set up your stands on? Water, trails, something else? Do stands for elk work better early part of the season or later or both? Should I be taking a stand with me when I head out west the latter half of September?

Nick

Over the years I found some concentrated transition/bedding areas that I set tree stands up.
I have a wallow spot too, but Aaron is going to be hunting that this year. :upthumb:

I would rather not carry a stand a long ways. 3/4 mile is my tops.
I figure I can find a tree stand location within that distance.

We see elk all season season long is these areas - mornings and evenings
But please note, we havent shot one from a stand in a long time - just hasnt worked out for some reason.

I set a camera looking at this stand

Sounds like a great day Brad! That speed goat looks huge and the mule deer buck looks to have some solid potential as well.
