The spot I hunted last year was perfect for a tree stand. The elk came out in the mornings and even on the edge of dark timber in a little meadow. The only problem is it\'s 3.5 miles from the truck. I was looking st the summit viper SD weighing 20 pounds. Is this feasible to think I can pack the climber 3 miles back? Does anybody have input on that climber?

I\'ve used an assortment of climbers, but not that one specifically..... so I won\'t give you any false info on that.
What I wanted to say if I think you have an awesome idea and you\'re really going to enjoy it.

I\'ve got some evening spots where I carry a climber into and it\'s some of the most enjoyable hunting at times.
I like to run and gun in the morning, so when the evening time comes around it\'s nice to sit.

Also having the height advantage works great with the elk!
They are not nearly as jumpy as the whitetail I hunt in other parts of the US.

Best of luck to you!

Alright so I just looked up the climber you\'re talking about and wanted to throw out some stuff...

Are you rifle or archery hunting?
You have to be careful finding a bow with stands that have that armrest or platform that goes all the way around.

You may not even notice, it\'s easy to smash your bow limbs on them... it creates lots of noise, possibly effects bow efficiency, or potentially can damage your bow.

I also recommend these stabilizer straps to anyone using a climber. Mark (bow freak) introduced me to them and they are AWESOME!

I bought an XOP climber and like it.
It\'s basically a Lone Wolf but 1/2 the cost
About 15lbs

I have no experience using a climber for elk hunting yet but I always have mine at camp if I wish to use it.
I have 2 summit Goliath climbers they r just like the viper but bigger as I\'m a big guy.
I love mine and have a couple buddies that have the viper and we all love them.
We all mainly use them for bow hunting.
I would highly recommend a summit.

As mentioned above you have to watch your cams or bow string if you are shooting at a steep angle (or if the animal is under you) otherwise they work great!

Brad do you have the strike force?

Yes I do
You dont have to get real high when hunting elk from a tree stand.
Most of mine are about 12ft

Here I am last year coming out of the woods from the above pic location
You don\'t even know the stand is on your back

Thanks brad. Found them on jet.com for 169 with first time user coupon. Might have to pull the trigger.

Do you feel you lose some of the excitement of elk hunting (run and gun, calling, etc) sitting in a tree?

I alternate sitting in a stand and so called run & gun mornings and evenings.
It\'s a great way to stay fresh and give the legs a rest

It\'s pretty frickin exciting to have elk come in to your tree stand :)

I have a Summit Viper and have taken many deer out of it with bow and gun. The rest that goes around does not effect your shooting as long as you stand up to shoot. I actually rest my bow across the rest and it works great. This stand by far is the most comfortable stand i have ever used to sit in and hunt all day. Now as far as packing it I don\'t like it at all for that. I have used my buddy\'s Lone Wolf, and he just bought a XOP to add to his arsenal. These stands pack very well as they go flat and are easy to strap down.

I would not see myself packing my Summit more than a mile or two. If your going far look at something that breaks down flat and is close to your back when packing in like the XOP, or Lonewolf.

HAS anybody stashed a climber stand before the season? Obviously since it\'s a climber it would have to be on the grounds. Would make it nice so I could pack in my overnight camp and not have to bring everything at once but I\'m concerned a mouse or squirrel might make the seat it\'s new nest...

My goal is to get an elk from my climber this year. It\'s like an XOP, but costs twice as much [emoji56]
