What type of special broad heads do you use while turkey hunting?
I always see them online and they look so funky. How can you even practice with them?
Does your range shorten up when shooting such odd heads.

Dan I use a NAP Gobbeler getter expandable for body shots. They are the same as the NAP Spitfire except have a coned tip for added shock. This year I\'m going to get the new muzzy heads for taking head shots. They are made so the blades fold back so you can put them in a normal qwiver till you get ready to use them then you fold the blades out and lock them in. The NAPs I shoot in my normal target but I don\'t know how I am going to practice with the head shot heads yet.

The Naps shoot just like field tips. Don\'t know what kind of range I will get with the Muzzy\'s yet.

I\'ve been using Rocket Hammerheads 3 blade 2 inch mechs. I dang near chopped a tom in half last year with one and its barely got a scratch. Broke the wing bone on both sides and cored a 2 in hole in the backbones, some pretty tough bone there!

Dan, it sounds like you are talking about broadheads that are to be used only for head and neck shots, of which there are several. The Muzzy is the newest. I have never used them myself. I use a large expandable and am not that particular of brand. I sometimes take longer shots than what would be prudent if I was using something like the Muzzy MORE. Last year I took a tom at 35 yds. going away from me. Most people say 15 to maybe 20 yds. would be max for the head only broadhead. I am not trying to discourage you or anyone else from using them however. They would be deadly and turkeys up close are great fun! It is certainly not difficult to hit a turkey in the body and not hit anything lethal!

Hey Tim have you used a head shot heads? If you have do you use your regular arrows. I thought I read once that you have to use a different arrow.

Tim,

you\'re absolutely correct.
I always see these funky things and I figured that I probably couldn\'t take a far shot.

I am happy to know there are normal broadheads that I can shoot!

Dan I know quite a few guys that use their regular broadheads. You just have to hit them in the right spot.

They say hit them low and watch them go hit them high and watch them die.

Francis, I have never used one. A friend I hunt with uses them but has never killed one with it. He carries one together with several regular heads and never seems to find the right moment to use it.
You might be able to use your regular arrow shaft with those heads but only if they are long enough to get the head out where there is no possibility of it making contact with your bow hand. The company that makes the Bullhead also makes shafts to go with them and sells an outfit that includes 3 heads and two shafts, or something like that.
I think Magnus makes the Bullhead.

Thanks Tim I will have to check my arrows and see if they will clear. I have to pick up some new arrows anyways so I might have a couple cut a little longer. I want to try out the new Muzzy\'s this year.

When do you guys start hunting? I don\'t hunt Wisconsin till the second week of May. I can bow hunt them the whole month of May in Mn. I have awhile before I get to hunt :(

Oklahoma opens April 6th and then New Mexico opens the 11th I believe.
I would like to take one from each state, but who knows!

Dan if you ever want to make a trip up this way I have 4 farms I can hunt here in Mn and in Wisc. we have a bunch of farms we hunt. The farmers hate them so its not hard to get permission to hunt them.

i am not hunting with a bow, but i got drawn for b season, april 20-24th. when mn decides that they have enough turkeys to allow more than 1 tag, i will start bow hunting them. they are too good of eating to risk eating tag soup.... plus i need the meat

You should head over to Wisc. Gary. As a non res. my tag I got drawn for and a leftover tag only costs me 80 bucks. Leftovers tags are only $15 for a non res.

Don\'t tease me with a good time Francis! I\'m know for driving endless amounts of miles to hunt

i\'m annoying to myself.

i spent real money on some of those decap heads..mine are not the gobbler guiottines..the name slips me. BULLHEADS!!

i also had some full length 0.330\" spines arrows with four vanes made up. haha..wasnt so cheap. shop made me buy a minimum of six. i have had them two seasons. to tell you the truth, i havent even shot them yet. couple of reasons;
1. i dont have a cheap pillow to shoot at
2. and when a turkey comes in, they seem to hang out at 20, and heat of the moment..i just fire a grim reaper.

i just keep carrying them back and forth from the blind like an idiot :D
