I drew an archery elk tag for unit 45. I have fair knowledge of the unit, but mainly down lower from days spent chukar hunting in past years. I haven't explored any of the higher areas of the unit. I have been looking over maps and will probably get to spend a weekend or two scouting this summer trying to find some elk. The harvest stats for this hunt are good, yet a lot of the information out there makes this hunt seem difficult if you don't have permission on private land. Is this the case, or are there plenty of elk on public land as well? I am a die hard caller and would love to concentrate my hunt in the areas that have timber/aspen/good cover. Any information would be much appreciated on some ideas of areas to start scouting.
