Well, it\'s getting closer to time to pack the truck and head to Nucla, CO to meet our guide for my wife\'s upcoming Unit 61 rifle elk hunt. She has been banking points for a trophy hunt and decided to use hers up this year(15 total). She has been going on rifle hunts off and on the past 15 years with me so she\'s not new to hunting elk. Granted, she\'s not ever had an opportunity on a large bull and that is most likely going change on this hunt!
Background: Sandy drew this same tag last year and I got some great scouting information from WW, Buglemaster and a few others. Thanks again guys! When scouting prior to the hunt, I wasn\'t seeing the bulls behind every tree like I had envisioned! WHAT?? There\'s supposed to be a minimum 330\" bull around every corner. Right. While I never saw the sign or elk that I had hoped for, I was confident we could get a good bull but was going to take a lot of work and pressure on her guide(ME).
Sandy\'s been really busy the last few years getting her RN and then BS in Nursing along with starting a new job at the hospital. She had so many things on her mind that elk hunting wasn\'t getting her excited. Not wanting to risk hearing her tell our company \"There\'s where we were going to put my bull elk IF I had gotten one\" while pointing to a large, blank spot on the living room wall, I decided to turn her tag in and start looking for an outfitter/guide. She was fine with that decision.....WHEW!!
I\'ll share information about the outfitter we chose after the hunt and anyone that\'s familiar with Unit 61 know it has to be one of three licensed guides in the area(I believe there are only 3 now).
This is a fully guided 2:1 hunt from 10/10 - 10/14. Hoping we don\'t use all 5 hunting days but prepared to if necessary. We\'ve never been on a guided hunt before so not sure of our expectations other than nice, warm accommodations including bed, hot water, flush toilet and decent hot meals! Of course, Sandy has to ask last night...\"Do they have a blow dryer?\".....a good place to stop for now.
