Well, it\'s getting closer to time to pack the truck and head to Nucla, CO to meet our guide for my wife\'s upcoming Unit 61 rifle elk hunt. She has been banking points for a trophy hunt and decided to use hers up this year(15 total). She has been going on rifle hunts off and on the past 15 years with me so she\'s not new to hunting elk. Granted, she\'s not ever had an opportunity on a large bull and that is most likely going change on this hunt!

Background: Sandy drew this same tag last year and I got some great scouting information from WW, Buglemaster and a few others. Thanks again guys! When scouting prior to the hunt, I wasn\'t seeing the bulls behind every tree like I had envisioned! WHAT?? There\'s supposed to be a minimum 330\" bull around every corner. Right. While I never saw the sign or elk that I had hoped for, I was confident we could get a good bull but was going to take a lot of work and pressure on her guide(ME).

Sandy\'s been really busy the last few years getting her RN and then BS in Nursing along with starting a new job at the hospital. She had so many things on her mind that elk hunting wasn\'t getting her excited. Not wanting to risk hearing her tell our company \"There\'s where we were going to put my bull elk IF I had gotten one\" while pointing to a large, blank spot on the living room wall, I decided to turn her tag in and start looking for an outfitter/guide. She was fine with that decision.....WHEW!!

I\'ll share information about the outfitter we chose after the hunt and anyone that\'s familiar with Unit 61 know it has to be one of three licensed guides in the area(I believe there are only 3 now).

This is a fully guided 2:1 hunt from 10/10 - 10/14. Hoping we don\'t use all 5 hunting days but prepared to if necessary. We\'ve never been on a guided hunt before so not sure of our expectations other than nice, warm accommodations including bed, hot water, flush toilet and decent hot meals! Of course, Sandy has to ask last night...\"Do they have a blow dryer?\".....a good place to stop for now.

I cannot imagine hiring a guide for this unit but to each his own. I wish her the best of luck & yes never having an opportunity will soon change. Don\'t let her kill a dink with that tag! Hope yall have a safe & fun filled adventure!

Pop-r, I guess my reasoning was use a guide for one of the higher producing units knowing we\'ll likely never draw that tag again. Wouldn\'t ever consider a guide for an OTC unit but like you said to each their own. There are a good number of elk in the unit and \"shouldn\'t\" have had any problem finding a good bull on our own.

However, part of this is for my wife. While she\'s tough and will hunt hard, her morale goes down quickly if not sleeping well or have a hot shower. Plus, it\'s likely a once in a lifetime type hunt for her since she wants to travel and not spend so much on a hunt.

And finally....I knew I was going to spend a lot of time this year bowhunting plus next year I should draw Unit 2 archery and will be gone 2 weeks around our 20th anniversary! So, I\'m greasing the wheels a little early!! :)

Good luck to Sandy! I hope she shoots a TOAD! We also had the impression last year that there would be Bulls everywhere. And there were, but you still had to hunt for them. With the exception of that pond I told you about, we only saw 1 small bull with 4 cows within a mile of the road, & someone had spooked them as they were haulin azz with their tongues hanging out. We should get to go back to 61 next year as Shawn should draw. He was a couple points behind Dusty & I. Anyway, good luck Russ & keep us posted. Pics are required!

Appreciate all the good mojo! Sandy isn\'t sleeping well so that\'s a good sign! :)

I meant to take pictures at the range for our starting sequence but got wrapped up in shooting and forgot. Camera is out and ready for the trip so there will be many pics along the way.

Rifle setup: She will be shooting my Browning A-Bolt II in 7mm magnum. It has a BOSS muzzle brake so the recoil isn\'t nearly as bad as the loud bang! Deafening to say the least. Ammo is Federal Premium 165 gr boat tail soft points. These fly great out of the rifle and mushroom really well while staying in-tact.

Packing up tomorrow after work and driving to Montrose for the night so we don\'t have such a long drive on Friday.

Okay, I guess I\'m not sleeping well either!

Good luck!! I have been lucky enough to help two friends fill there tags in 61, it was a great time. Make the most of it and have fun.

Wow Sandy! What a great opportunity. Best of luck to you. Just don\'t eat the chilli until after the hunt is over. LOL! Hey Russ, How would you like to have someone go along with you in unit 2 to call for you?

Oh, my......(not a good way to start an update)!! Driving in to work this morning and hear a loud revving of engine so looking around and don\'t see any yahoo around me and glance at my tach...6000 rpm! WTH?? Look and still in Drive. Hit gas and tach goes up but not speed! Hit flashers and pull into parking lot. Check trans fluid - low but not to where this would be caused. Went in Walmart anyways and bought fluid and cheapo funnel. Topped it off and hit the road.

Once my pickup got over 25 mph, it would high rev like being shifted into Neutral. Nursed it to a local tire shop that does minor repairs and they said it\'s gotta be an internal tranny issue they can\'t diagnose or fix. DAMN!

Call tranny place - they can do diagnostics but no chance of a repair today or likely tomorrow. Need to be in Nucla around 1 pm tomorrow.

Checked National Car rental for a pickup - no dice. SUV - got one and it\'s only like $700 for the week!

Looks like I\'ll be taking a Honda Accord on it\'s first hunt!! Called guide and decision is to take car and go back for meat and horns a following weekend. It\'s a 6.5- 7 hour drive each way but honestly can\'t come up with any alternatives. Don\'t know anyone with a pickup I could borrow so kinda S.O.L.!!

Ruh Roh!
Just get there and make the most of the car!

Your title \'Unit 61 adventure\' is living up to the name already!
