I'm going on my first elk bow hunt. Is there a need to upgrade any bow equipment such as arrow weights, or certain grain of broad head?

It all depends on what you currently shoot and where you are going to hunt.  Some states have strict rules on archery equipment so verify that via the states department of natural resources.  Washington for example requires 6 grains per pound of draw weight, therefore @ 29in draw my complete arrow has to 420 grains minimum.  Broad head weight is up to you, I shoot 100 grain G5 Strikers.  Make sure you meet the minimum cut diameter and also some states do not allow expandable broad heads.  My best advice for penetration is to shoot the heaviest arrow that your draw weight allows, still maintaining a reasonable trajectory.

I agree with ElkManDan, any excuse to upgrade your bow or purchase a new one i would jump at.  Also like northwesthunter84 said make sure you check with the state regulations. State of idaho you can not use expandable broadheads or lighted nocks. Plus your arrow has to be certain weight and certain draw weight as well.  Good luck.

Is there ever a bad excuse to buy a new bow or set up lol? my bow meets all the requirements but im going all new this year too because its time.  ;D

I've got 2 bows on the way now.......

My other Elk bow would have been fine,  but now I've got more choices!  I've also got the recurve that might come into play as well.....Come on September!

What are you shooting now?

I shoot an older bow... a 2005 Mathews LX and I still love it. As a generally accepted rule for bowhunting elk, make sure you are shooting at least a 400 grain arrow. Check your kinetic energy, Gold Tip arrows website has a calculator on it http://www.goldtip.com/calculators.aspx  Easton's website says 60+ ft-lbs for elk, but in my opinion, anything over 55ft-lbs is good to go.  Remember that KE is reduced the further out you shoot, so know your effective range.

Good luck on your first hunt!
