Brad made good point on another thread <!-- l --><a class=\"postlink-local\" href=\"http://www.elkmentors.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=497\">viewtopic.php?f=24&t=497</a><!-- l -->

So how does one use herd populations & objectives/bull cow ratios/and leftover tags available to find a unit to learn?

To answer that question, I would go, in person, to your wildlife biologists for the areas you are interested in, and tell them specifically what you are hunting for. If you want a 5x5 or larger bull and don\'t want raggies or cows, then they should be able to point you in the right direction. I have gone to the local Dept. of Fish and Wildlife and got excellent information. Be very specific or you could find yourself in an area with lots of elk but a poor ratio of good bulls.
Personally I am not so concerned about what their objectives are when I am scouting. I want to know what is actually there. I like discussing objectives in a winter meeting.
