Hello,
I am trying to plan an elk hunt with a buddy here in Western New York and my brother who just moved to St George Utah. We have never hunted Elk before. We've decided on Utah so my brother can hunt as a resident and so hopefully he can do at least a little scouting for us. We would drive out there for the hunt and in total, there would be 4 in the group.
We aren't looking to get trophies by any means. Any elk would make us more than happy, bull or cow - so we are looking at the OTC "any bull" areas where you can also get an antlerless control tag. Our current plan is to hunt the South Slope/Yellowstone unit for any bull/cow. We wanted to hike miles back to escape from some pressure and do a true backcountry hunt. However, I learned that in the time of the rifle season, the elk have moved down in elevation and wont be way back where we would want to go, near the Uinta ridge. So we would have to hunt the lower elevations of the south slope where there is not as much country and many hunters. We definitely are not afraid of a hard hike and a tough hunt. We also might consider doing an archery hunt so we can go all the way in the back country, but aren't sure.
Can any of you give me pointers on if this plan is any good? Have many of you hunted Utah before? Should we be looking at a totally different area or change to the archery season?
ANY help you can give me would be GREATLY appreciated!!
Thanks,
Ben
