For as long as I can remember the only way Ive hunted elk was to park my truck at a gate and start putting distance between me and the gate. This year however, my dad and brother drew a respected elk tag here in WA. The timber company is going to allow drive in on all there land with the purchase of a $150 permit. My question is, best strategy hunting an area with many folks cruising the roads?

Having lots of vehicle traffic isn't always a terrible thing. My best friend has a ladder stand in a small ravine no more than 100 yards from a well used quad trail. It's got water in the bottom but unless you get off the trail and hike in you'd never know its there. There's nothing a long the trail that looks like it would be "good hunting" so guys just drive on by without a second thought. What they don't know is that there are open meadows up above the trail that's perfect feed (can't see from trail), there's water in the bottom, and then a beautiful pine covered north facing slope next to the water. Everything adds up to tons of elk, deer, and even bears coming to the water right in front of the stand. He's even been in the stand while animals are at the water and people drive by on the quad trail and the animals didn't think anything of it. They know where they're safe! Get creative and it might pay off!
