Is there a set time where an elk might hit a wallow/water hole/some mud?

Are they doing it earlier in the morning to cool down before bed?
Or is it more of a wake up and then cool down so they can go start searching for cows all night?

Both?

Kinda depends on where the wallow is at.
If its lower on the mtn, they will prob use it more at night when they are feeding.
Higher ones can get used anytime during the day

I think Brad is right. I have seen no pattern for wallowing. It seems very sporadic. The bummer is that a wallow may not get used this season that has been a favorite in the past.
There is a great looking wallow on another thread. Maybe if I was invited to set a stand there, I would wait at that spot, but usually I need more than a recent wallow to entice me. Good trails and standing dirty water with the stench of elk all around, make a spot more exciting.
