iccyman001 sent me a hot tip. Walmart is having a blow out sale on their tree stands. Free shipping if you spend over $50 so I bought 2.

Thanks Dan!

I got one too.

You can never have too many of these things.
For the price you just can\'t beat it!

It turns out I couldn\'t say \"no\" to the higher cost! Go two of \'em.

Put them together this morning ... sturdy, medium-weight, simple design. Didn\'t expect bells or whistles for the price.

Question. This will be my first experience with hanging/using a tree stand so bear with me...

What are you guy\'s using as far as \"steps\" to both hang and/or get into your stand? This will be for elk season so I was planning on packing it in a little ways, not too far, but obviously one of those big ladders isn\'t an option.

Are you guys using something like these climbing sticks : <!-- m --><a class=\"postlink\" href=\"http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunting/Hunting-Treestands/Climbing-Sticks-Tree-Steps%7C/pc/104791680/c/104783580/sc/104549580/Hawk-Tractiontrade-SS-Climbing-Sticks/2059540.uts?destination=%2Fcategory%2FClimbing-Sticks-Tree-Steps%2F104549580.uts\" onclick=\"window.open(this.href);return false;\">http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunting/ ... 549580.uts</a><!-- m -->

or are these simple screw-in steps just as good: <!-- m --><a class=\"postlink\" href=\"http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunting/Hunting-Treestands/Climbing-Sticks-Tree-Steps%7C/pc/104791680/c/104783580/sc/104549580/Ameristepreg-Step-Up-Tree-Step-150-Single/1826934.uts?destination=%2Fcategory%2FClimbing-Sticks-Tree-Steps%2F104549580.uts\" onclick=\"window.open(this.href);return false;\">http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunting/ ... 549580.uts</a><!-- m -->

Anthony,

I honestly use both. To me its different for every tree.
The screw in steps are nice because you leave them out there and don\'t have to carry them around like you do with the sticks, but some people feel more safe with the sticks verse the screw ins.

All I can say is figure out what YOU are most comfortable with and what you feel the safest on.

I know more often than not, people like climbing sticks better.

What I will do in some spots is have 3 sections of climbing sticks. I will set up my sticks and my stand. Then when I leave I will remove the bottom section of steps. That way no one can steal the other two or get in my stand. It\'s also lighter to carry one set out to the woods verse 3.

Thanks Dan!

I think i\'ll start with those screw in steps, set it up in my backyard and see how I feel.

Be VERY careful with screw ins. They do loosen up and pull out, sag, etc. I fell one time coming down and thought I had put on the step when in fact I was on a stub of a dead branch. It broke, I dropped about 6\" to the step, didn\'t hit it square (almost broke my ankle) and ended up on the ground. Had a customer fall from a stand and caught a screw in step in the upper arm as he tried to hug the tree. It tore his bicep free of the bone, almost ending his bowhunting for the rest of his life. I have a bunch and pretty much just use them for bow and pack hangers. I would spend the money on a set of ladder sticks.

Hmm, yeah that doesn\'t sound fun. Money isn\'t an issue with this decision as the ladder sticks seem to be relatively cheap as well. They just seem large and bulky and i\'m trying to imagine how in the world i\'m going to pack this semi-heavy/bulky tree stand plus a set of climbing sticks out into the woods.

I have quite a few different hunting spots picked out this year compared to last, some easier to access than others. I\'m thinking the tree stand will end up in one of the few spots we have ATV access to, to make transportation easier.

Anthony,

If you watch camofire.com. they sell decent climbing sticks for decent prices every now and then.
I have picked up a few sets for the reason I explained earlier.

I will set up a stand and 2 or 3 of the climbing sticks.
When I leave I only take the bottom row of sticks. That way no one can reach my second or third and they cannot get into my stand.
Now I am only carrying 1 set of sticks out there verse the 3.

Barry is right an thats why I just mentioned to do what you feel safest with.

I have some stands with the screw ins and others with sticks. Regardless I am always wearing a harness. :upthumb:

I should have got one of these when they had them marked down. I clicked on the link and they are now back up to $48.
