Want to take dad out west.

I need help. I want to take my dad out west to experience an elk hunt before he isn’t able to go. The problem I have is, he has a bad knee. Don’t get me wrong he can walk good distances but just in more of a rolling terrain as opposed to a mountainous terrain. We don’t need to see 300+ bulls we just want to see elk – I’m sure he would be just fine with shooting a cow.

I was thinking Colorado OTC area but I’m just not sure where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Rich

I think no matter what western state you go to there are lots of elk. I would call some wildlife biologists and ask them for places to go and places that your dad could probably handle. I call fish and game for the states I hunt in a few times a year and see what the reports are like.

Rich, There are some great late season cow hunts that take place in more of the sage country of NW CO that would be worth looking into.  You don't say how old your dad is, or if you are looking to go DIY, or maybe even just pay a trespass fee?  If you want to call CO Parks & Wildlife as MT_Mulies suggests, call the local field offices.  Find their contact info here: http://wildlife.state.co.us/About/OfficesAndPhone/Pages/ContactNumbers.aspx    Maybe try the Steamboat office, as they have ALWAYS been helpful to me.  Just don't wait until they are buried with quesitons at the end of March.

Idaho OTC tag and hunt in the southern parts of the state.  Sure its a cow only tag but if hes not opposed to shooting a cow then its a good place to hunt for him.

New Mexico offers some flatter terrain and fun cow/raghorn options. If you've got a few $ you can even get a land owner tag.    www.wildlife.state.nm.us  The land owner tags come in "Unit Wide" and "Ranch Only" versions. Choose carefully.

You could always go with an outfitter if your time is short. We use to hunt with a guy Hubbard Creek Outfitters in CO. We did a drop camp with him but he has a place where he has had folks that are getting older or have a bad wheel and really works hard to get them and elk. Supper nice guy! Just a thought. But I would still try CO as it probably has the best opportunity for elk of any state. Talk to biologists and get as much information about the different hunts so you can make a good decision and get your best chance.

Head for Montana and the Little Bull Mountains near Musselshell and Roundup. Riling hills and there are guides in the area that can put you in a blind or tree stand over water and you will see plenty of game. In fact you can do a combo and shoot a Muley or whitetail.
