Wapiti calling basics

OK guys and Gals,

I\'m going to start doing some elk calling lesson\'s. My question is what are you mostly struggling on so I can really go into dept in those areas.

Thanks as your input will help a lot. Remember no question are off limits.

I\'ll probably break it all down into short video\'s to make it easier for downloading. Each vid should be about 1 minute for you guys.

Hope we can all learn something along the way !

Awesome Trav. Thanks again for doing this. :upthumb:

One of the things I really have a hard time with is the different bulges. I have a hard time understanding the differences in sound. What should I be keying on to tell the difference?

Thanks Francis.

This is just my two cents, so take it for what it\'s worth ;)

How about something like an intro to basic calls and tactics, then more advanced calls and tactics, and then highly advanced? Something like that where we have info for everyone from the newbie to the very experienced.

Agreed. Combine calls and tactics. Keeping them separate isn\'t helpful. Basic, intermediate, and advanced.

To piggy back on this, the basics and tactics needs a how to on using the diaphragm.
So many people are scared or intimidated by using them, so if you showed the proper placement of the reed and how to get noises out, etc, then I see it being very beneficial.

Thanks again for this, Trav!

My biggest issue is knowing what calling combination to run. I can make good cow mews but I am not always sure what kind of sequence to use. That is where I struggle. I know a lot will come with the more interactions I have with elk calling but a good foundation will be good to have.

Looking forward to your lessons Travis.

When is this going to happen so I can keep an eye out for it?

The biggest struggle I have is the chuckle. Particularly with the vocal inhale portion and sequencing it all together to make it sound realistic. Probably the least used call in my arsenal, but there are times when it can be highly effective.

I agree, it\'s definitely an effective item to have in your pocket of tricks.
I\'m really practicing them a lot this year.

I\'m hoping to have the first of the series starting next week Bill. I have a 4 day tradeshow starting tomorrow so I\'ve been to busy to get it started. I should be home about 1-2 am Sunday and once I get rested up I\'ll be working on video\'s.

Thanks again

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a little lifetime.

Everybody\'s elk herds are different and act differently. Teach begining, intermediate, and advanced calling. But do not teach tactics. Instead, teach elk instinct, factors that can effect elk, and what sounds mean. From there, many can apply what they\'ve learned to their own flavor of elk.

The problem with commercialization is that the \"experts\" have taken their tactics and tried to convince others that they work on all elk. Many on here have seen the light and said......\"no they don\'t\".

So don\'t be one of those experts, be a teacher and teach us how to fish.

My 2-cents.

Yes agreed John.

Elk are elk but not all areas are the same from elk densities to hunter densities and therefore elk scenario\'s will defer for sure. I will keep the video\'s mostly about learning the elk reeds and get everyone really calling better.

Thanks

Trav

He\'s probably still making them, but I found this!

Yes sir guys !

I am behind as usual with a very busy schedule ! I still have to get to the video\'s for you folks. These tradeshows are killing me. Selling out each show and then getting back home and spending hours and hours rebuilding stock for the next show. If I don\'t keep at it my wife hounds me like there\'s no tomorrow !!

So as soon as I can I will get at least a couple vids up for you all. Please be patient.

Thanks again
