Washing elk smell from pack

Hey guys I got a new pack and want to know how you all get the blood and elk smell out after you have packed out and animal ?

I\'ve basically just rinsed it all down so far but I\'m thinking I may need to put it in the washer or something.

Thanks for the input.

I just toss mine in the washer bud. I put it on a more delicate setting so it doesn\'t romp on it, but it always cleans it nice.
I usually do a load that is my bloody pack and game bags.... my wife loves it.

cool good stuff. I\'ll have to get the frame out first !! LOL

Take off the buckles and toss it in wash. You can spot wash the blood spots. I don\'t get too worried about stains but don\'t want the blood smell. Actually, I kinda like the blood stains!

Yup I\'m more concerned with the smell as I\'m hunting 2 really big bulls right now !!

I just don\'t want the blood smell to screw up a hunt. LOL

I use a pressure washer. One of the light duty, cheap homeowner ones or the wand at the car wash.

Don\'t let it get that way in the first place. Place the quarters in plastic garbage bags before putting them in your pack. Just be sure to take the plastic off as soon as you get to camp or the truck.

I don\'t worry much about stains. The way I clean everything is to soak it over night in a bucked of water with a cup or two of baking soda and stir it with a stick. Use plenty of it. It doesn\'t do a very good job of cleaning ( but who cares )! Dirt is a good camo color, isn\'t it. However, it does a great job getting rid of the odor.

Yes I agree with using the garbage bags but we packed out 2 bulls and a cow on back to back days and the plastic bags were all used up or torn. I don\'t care about the reddish stain as it looks manly now !! LOL

I\'ll try the soaking method when I get home again but for now I\'m back out hunting !!

Ya\'ll get ready to jump on me and I know elk ain\'t whitetail but many times I killed a good buck in the exact same spot I killed another deer within hours of when I killed the 1st one... Just food for thought...

UMmmm walking around in Grizzly country wearing a elk blood soaked pack seems like a really bad idea !!

But that\'s just me !! LOL

Kind of just joking Wapiti. But seriously, my pack has a very faint elk smell and I love it. Everytime I grab that bag it reminds me of hunting. FWIW, I have carried at least 10 elk out in that bag. The meat was in game bags only and I never use a trash bag. The bag doesn\'t smell bad. My wife doesn\'t comment on it so I know this to be true. Does your bag smell really bad or is it just a slight meaty smell? Leaving it in the sun and just letting it air out might do the trick. However, if it was bloody and still moist and immediately got packed away I could see how it could get pretty funky.

I used to have an old Cabelas Alaskan pack frame with a bag - still have it but its wore out after 20 years
Well, I took the bag from it and modified it to fit one of my Kelty Cache Haulers

I have no idea how many elk I have packed out with that bag and like AndyJ said, it has an \'aroma\' :)
I just rinse it out as necessary.
It has some blood stains but nothing I worry about.

Ya more just the meat elk type smell. nothing bad or anything. It now smells of Moose as well !! I`m not gonna worry about it. I rinsed it off and called it good.

Thanks dudes !
