What are the secret things you like about hunting season?

Obviously we all have our main reasons we love hunting, but what are some of your not so common or \"secret\" reasons you love hunting season?

For me:
- Facial hair: This December I hit my 10 year mark in the military. I have to shave daily for work.
So when hunting season comes around... it\'s SUCH a relief. I can get my manly beard time on and my face gets a break.
- CANDY!: Everyday of the year (ok, most of them) my body is a temple. I eat right, train hard, and take care of myself.
So when hunting season comes around.... it\'s SWEDISH FISH AND SOUR PATCH KID TIME. NOM NOM NOM. My favorite part is when it\'s super cold outside.
The swedish fish and sour patch kids get kind of hard. They just taste better when you are sitting in a stand or blind...
- NO TECHNOLOGY: I hate hate hate hate hate hate technology with a passion. I know that\'s odd for a guy to say who spends his time on hunting forums, but I can\'t stand it one bit. The only reason I have a phone is because of work, otherwise I would ditch that thing too. I don\'t have social media, I don\'t care for all the new fancy gismos and gadets, and the only reason I have a TV is because it\'s my roommates.
So when hunting season comes around...... it\'s freedom.... no phone calls, text messages, emails.... time is mine and I do my favorite thing in the world.... hunt.
- The moon: We all see the moon, just about daily for some, but when hunting season comes around it\'s a whole different moon.
I\'m an early riser and love getting to my stands early. There is just something about walking into a stand at 4am guided by nothing, but a big bright moon.... it\'s amazing.



These are just some, but I could go on forever.........


How about yours?
 
Coyotes yipping in the middle of the night. The patter of rain on the tent.
Lacing up wet boots. The smell of a campfire smoke in your clothes.
 
easy.

Frosted pop tarts. only time in my life i feel eating those things is okay..it wont go straight to my body fat reserves. i am burning so many calories on the mountain hikes..whatever! i think they have some weird processing ingredient that makes them pliable. even crushed without mercy by my spotting scope, they still come out of that mylar packaging with some structural integrity. it aint natural man.. but i love eating them up there.

and it is the only time in my brotherhood my brother will open up to me. something about being exhausted gets him to tell me some of the crap going on in his life. we can be scouting animals, sititng on a mountian top silent behind big glass optics and he just mutters a nugget like, \"so Erika and i are not getting along.......\"
outta no where...
 
Getting away from people, traffic, and the daily grind and headaches work brings. The feeling of the unknown on how the hunt will end, and what I will see and encounter.

These are part of my secret secret stash too. I eat a nice breakfast. Then around 9am the first 5 hour energy and bag of candy comes out.

Long UNINTERRUPTED talks with God that help me set my rudder correctly. Dipping my hand in icy cold water gurgling out of the ground without filtering or adding chemicals. A full immersion bath in a pool of that same icy water further downstream after a few days of hard hunting. The night sky during any moon phase. All the thoughts and feelings that come with being more vulnerable by today\'s standards yet also being able to enjoy life as very few people today do or want to.

I\'m hunting a different unit this year, but on my last three trips I\'ve enjoyed munching on raspberries that grow near the top of a 40\' rock outcropping that I first climbed just because it was there. I\'ll miss the taste of those berries and the view.

I\'ve also been known to launch an arrow from a ridge top down into a bowl above treeline just to see how far it would fly. ;0)
 
Wow! Absolutely everything already mentioned except for Hackbow\'s full immersion bath in icy water!

Even a little of the campfire smoke in your eyes due to the constantly swirling wind.
 
just the peacefulness that comes with being outdoors. Another thing I will add for me is the satisfaction once I harvest an animal knowing i am putting food on the table for my family.
 
My secret thing used to be pretending I was working from hunting camp because I checked email once a day and delegated some stuff. Maybe an hour of work during midday slow camp time equaled essentially a \"vacation\" day without taking one. 0
 
Hackbow, be careful with that water gurgling out of the ground. When I was a Ranger I once got a terrible cryptosporidium from doing that with ice cold \"pure\" water that came right out of a granite fissure up on a mountain. Thankfully it wasn\'t during hunting season. I was so sick I had to have another ranger drive me to town to the doc.
 
The chance too appreciate the good things about my wife and kids and reflect on how to be a better husband and father the next year.
 
Lou - duly noted and thanks. Guess I\'ve dodged the bullet over the years. We drank out of a spring on our farm in IL for many years before something in the ground shifted and it no longer produces. I lived in PA for 10 yrs and there was a spring along a road that the landowner allowed people to use. Every time I was in that area I would fill up a jug or two. I just assumed that water coming out of the ground at 10,000\' would be safe as well. Live and learn!
 
I just love sitting on a ridge over looking the night sky as lightening is flashing across the sky !! The awesome power and beauty are second to none !

I also really enjoy the cat and mouse chase of a smarter than me bull !! Some of the smartest ones are small 4-5 point bulls !!
 
No work, no email, no cell.

Watching, smelling and listening in the forest is extremely peaceful. I loose track of time when I watch wildlife, fish and birds. I am one of those weirdos who is fascinated by the busy work of ants. September is an excuse to waste countless hours sitting in the forest and observing everything going on in the forest.

There is no movie as captivating and thrilling as elk hunting in September. One minute, I am sitting in this peaceful bliss and the next minute an elk appears and my heart starts to pound out of my chest the way no roll-coaster ride can achieve. I am secretly an adrenaline junkie.
 
Everyone has nailed it pretty well. One thing I have noticed being from the flat lands at low elevation is how when I\'m in the mountains the stars look so close to me. I come out of the tent in the morning and just stare at the sky for awhile every morning.I really enjoy the mornings in the mountains.
 
I have come to realize that when Im at 10k ft enjoying life Im really that much closer to God.
Like 2 miles closer... :)
