Hey guys. New to the forum and Elk hunting. Might have a chance to go elk hunting next year and am getting pretty excited about it already. Just curious as to what colors and brands you guys are using for your clothing. I live in MN and heard that what we use up here Realtree/mossy oak may not work as well as out in the back country type of hunting. Any advice would help. Thanks!

I like lighter colored patterns for western hunting, but I wouldn't get to worried about your camo. Stay in the shadows and keep your movement to a minimum and you should be fine. If your looking for an excuse to buy some new camo, look at sitka's open country, max1 or kryptek highlander. Good luck in your search and on your hunt!

now don't get me wrong , my favorite color is camo !!! , but for elk hunting I have the best luck with a solid color , if im hunting in the trees I prefer a solid darker color ( color itself is not important elk are color blind ) if im in open grassy areas match the tone of the grass , in my area its mostly dried /tan grass so I wear a medium shade. Just my opinion but its worked well for me for 36 years of bow hunting now.

here is the deal brother its not the camo that you need to worry about broken silhouette is all that matters what you should be concerned about is the type of garment it is. are they clothes that will wick your sweat keep your scent down and you can walk and hunt in for days and miles on end. layering is always key but having the correct layers for running up down and around elk country is crucial. cotton will kill ya most folks are up to date with tech clothes now days you might consider merino wool defiantly great socks and boots can make and break. all things to keep in mind well ahead of pattern :)

Thanks for the replies. Getting a good idea now of what to use out there. I like Sitka patterns but am not spending that kind of money on clothes. I'll search for what can break up a silhouette and see what options there are.

Check out Camofire.com....lots of Sitka bargains. Mountain Archery also has deals

If your looking for a cheaper camo that I think works good, look at predator camo. Camofire has had some great deals on it when it comes around. You might even try calling them to see what they still have in stock, they'll hook you up good!

I've been using Multicam all over the hills here in UT and couldn't be happier.

dmak - who is making multicam with any sort of performance fabrics? I'm curious to know. Not a huge fan of multicam, but always interested in knowing what level of performance clothing is being made by whom.

Ive been using both Crye and Arc Teryx brand multicam and am in love. The Arc MC Combat jacket is super comfy, breathable and quiet.

there are some nice multi cam sets on amazon down sides are they are Chinese and sizing can be a mess. up side isits stupid affordable and so far from what i have seen is nice stuff. got it for my son mostly cause he will grow out of it and was saving my pocket. secondly it comes in ATAC as well and that is his bag of camo he loves.

I would second a lot of the comments already made on here. Personally I find the Realtree and Mossy Oak patterns to be too dark for the most part. The exceptions there would be Max-1 and Mossy Oak Brush. After that I would stick to any pattern that breaks up the silhouette well. You can get a good pattern at just about any price range. Sitka, Kuiu, First lite, Kryptek, Core4Element, Predator.... you get the idea. If you're looking for good deals then definitely keep an eye on Camofire!

I prefer a little lighter pattern because it's easy to step back in the shadows but hard to "lighten" your pattern when you get caught in a grass or sage brush flat. I can't speak enough to the importance of layering systems. Yes it can get a bit pricey to buy so many different pieces but when you figure out what layers work in different situations it makes the hunt that much more enjoyable.

I went to camofire and signed up. But all I can see is the 5 deals of the day. How do I buy the other stuff they list? The email listed about 10 other things. But I can't figure out how to look at those. They listed a pair of Sitka gloves I wanted to look at and buy but couldn't figure out how to get to them.

every few hours they post something new get the phone app and set up your account and when it comes up pull the trigger. if youll notice the items up on the block have a timer when the timer is up a new item from that list will appear.

You can only see the 5 deals at any 1 time on the site. As has been mentioned all of the deals are on a countdown clock and rotate once they've sold out or the time is up. If you see something on the email that you don't see on the site call customer service are 801-676-9631 and they can help you out. Brad and Josh are great to deal with and can run an order for you.

Never mind I think I  figured it out. When a timer runs out on one product a new one goes up, right?

Bingo! Like was said get the ap and you will never miss a deal again. Also don't forget about camofires sister company, Black Ovis this site you can get what you want when you want it without having to wait for it to come up as the deal, but you will pay retail price for it. Good luck in your search. If your interested in a set of Core4 element( pant, shirts, coat, vest, gaiters) in the Mountain Mimicry pattern let me know I'm thinking of trying something new for fun.

Gotta agree with Cowboy on this one. Don't worry about the pattern, make sure what you're wearing is quick drying, breathable, and performance based. Rain gear should also be breathable. Wear hot pink for all the elk care! I wear kuiu, all my buddies wear Sitka or firstlite. It makes elk hunting lots more comfortable when the fabrics are designed to do what you are doing. Layering is key...

Ok I've been looking at Sitka and Kryptek a lot. And with the deals on camofire it's hard to beat. I know highlander and open country camo is popular for out there but what do you guys think about using more of a green color in these patterns? As I've mentioned I live in MN and it's pretty green until the end of October usually so if I'm gonna drop $400-500 on camo id like something I can use here as well. And how much does the actual camo color matter? After all we wear blaze orange during rifle season and I've had a 10 pointer walk within 20 feet of me looking right at me. So I figure a green should be ok, right?
