What do you do? Shoot A, shoot B, or hold out for daddy!

You stumble into these 2 bulls opening weekend. You see them first as they feed head down in a swampy meadow. They are both in velvet. The first bull is out in the open feeding quartering slight to you at 32 yards. As you watch him you see movement to the right. A bull feeding in the trees, also head down. The wind is swirling at 10am and the bull to the right will be a problem any second.

Bull feeding in the open is a 2 year old 4x4. The bull in the trees is a much larger bodied 5x6 with a good whale tale on the 5 and a small 5th coming off the main beam on the 6side.

This is an OTC public area that gets hit hard.

Option A. Smoke the 2 year old at 33 yards
Option B. Try to thread the needle on the 5x6
Option C. ????

I think I\'m going with option C.

My option C is to pull back a bit so they don\'t catch my wind, put them to bed, and re-engage on the 5x6 at a later time! :mg:

A 4 point should not still be in velvet during that time of year. But hey! Anything is possible. :dk: I would pass on the 4 point and wait for a closer look or and open shot on the other bull. If that doesn\'t happen I\'ll just pass on both and enjoy the moment.

(A trophy is in the eyes of the beholder)

How close is the second bull? Roughly 32-35 yds?

If so, I\'ll thread that needle at that distance and mostly I like the fact he is quartering away over the other bull.

I\'m not one to get greedy AT ALL, let that be understood. I just like opportunity/ angle at the larger bull more.

If I\'m that close and their heads are down I\'m not backing out now. I\'m making it happen.

Second bull is less than 30.

WW This pic was taken 2 weeks before the opener. I imagine they rubbed that week.

im taking the first good shot i have on either bull.

Which shot do you like? Assuming you have only a few seconds/minutes to make up your mind due to wind. Slightly quartering to you on the small bull or threading the trees on a slightly quartering away on the bigger? Or do you wait and chance the wind because you don\'t like either?

Sorry, I just assumed it was the first week of the season. I see plenty of velvet spikes but branched bulls in velvet during the season is a new one on me. But, kike I said, I suppose anything is possible.

For me I would take the second one at this time. Under 30 and quartering away. I don\'t see anything that would stop me from taking both lungs out.

I guess the questions is...how flat does your bow shoot? Zoomed in...think you can slide one under the limb?

I\'m shooting. I know this is basic for most of you, but if you place your 30 yard pin in the kill zone, check your 20 yard pin (if you have one) before you shoot - if its not on the obstruction/branch, your arrow is clear, turn it loose. Use your pins to confirm the flight path of your arrow.

Good info Mitch. Being new to the stick and string, I hadn\'t heard of that before. Makes perfect sense though!

Unless my eyes deceive me...that bull looks beautifully quartered away and my entry is wide open to exit on the far shoulder. At 30 yards, I\'m dropping the string on him.
