What is the truth?

Just because you buy a brand X bugle and blow it out in the woods a couple times, does not mean the elk will just come running in. What is another example of truth?

I\'d have to say one of the biggest lies, well maybe not lies we all mean well, is any of us, myself included, telling anyone how their next elk encounter is going to go or how the next elk he or she sees will act. Every year I learn way more than I knew the year before because of an elk doing something completely unexpected that I have never heard of before. Learn all you can, but be prepared to think totally outside the box if you want to consistently kill elk.

One of the biggest truths is that we all have our limits, and need to know them. BTW, I have a lot of limitations.
Another truth is that, we all have abilities and areas of strength we can build on, and develop to our advantage. To my way of thinking tree stand hunting is one of those things many could develop skill at. After the first trial, I did not think much of tree stands, until I saw just the right spot to make it pay big dividends.

To add to John\'s OP, no piece of gear will make you a better hunter. They might enhance what you already have but focus on bread and butter skills: woodsmanship, stalking, being aware of your surroundings, knowing the habits of your prey, and you will become a better hunter. Material \"advantages\" only give a hunter the illusion of being better. If one product actually worked miracles, there would be no other competition.

To add to Andys post

\"You need to most expensive camo or you won\'t kill anything.\"

We know how that works out :)

Weapons competence, stealth, positioning, area knowledge, and time. These things combined kill more elk than anything.

\"This aint Hollywood!\" Anybody heard that before? Guess those public land bulls don\'t act like the bulls I\'ve watched on TV.

Welcome to the site Alan! :welcome:

Thank You Derek, I am looking forward to some real elk hunting talk, without talking about elk talk, know what I\'m talking about? Now say that three times real fast;)

Welcome to the forum Allen (Two Bear). It is good to have your here in camp. Pull up a good wood block to sit on, pour your own cup of coffee. and keep a sharp eye on cnelk. He can be mischievous when he has no parental supervision. :D

Alan,
Anyone who lets a bear sit in his tree stand should be interrogated :)
Good to see you here

Is this the Two Bears Alan from Montana? Welcome aboard!

Well we have plenty of elk hunting talk, without talking about elk talk. But some users on here like to talk about elk talk. Feel free to talk about either elk hunting talk or elk talk. Either talk is allowed! :)

Yes it is Alan from Montana. I\'ve read through a ton of post on here and really enjoy the site. I don\'t mind the elk talk, just don\'t want it to be the epicenter of every conversation, and this site fits the bill. I love calling, but it is certainly not the end all of elk hunting, in fact, personally I am calling less and less these days as tactics evolve. Most folks know I own an outfitting business, but forget I am an elk hunter first. Just looking forward to being on a site and being an elk hunter, not here to try book any hunts. Great topics from what I\'ve seen.
