Day is Sept 14th, 2016
Your first three days of your hunt were rough, so you decided to still hunt and scout a new area.
It\'s around 9:30 in the morning and you pop into this field. Loving life because you\'re in the mountains and get to experience this beautiful scenery you decide it to let a location bugle out, just cause.

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE boom, before you could finish, you just got cut off by a gnarly bugle....something like you\'ve never heard before.
It\'s up directly ahead of you, about where you see those lighter tree tops.

Wind is in your face, you\'re in the middle of the field.......

WHAT DO YOU DO NEXT?
What thoughts go through your head?

Probably screw it up but get on that ridge and wait for the thermals to switch. After they do I\'m heading his way on the high side and hopefully be able to challenge him with a bugle.

Dan that\'s the ridge I walked into at 6:30 AM and I\'m the gnarly bugle your hearing !!

Please don\'t shoot me !! LOL

Well Im gonna try to answer my own question because nobodies answer is right or wrong.

First thing I am thinking is I need to get out of this field.
So I am sprinting directly to the tree line.
Once I am safe, I am going straight at this dude.

This dude just cut me off with something fierce, but I don\'t know what is was. Was he returning a call or ready to fight?
I\'d quickly get in another 50-75 yards, now in better concealment(one with lanes too, just in case) and want to call again.
My eyes are also super scanning right now because nothing says he couldn\'t have been coming in right after he heard me.
Instead of letting another bugle rip for him to cut me off, I wanna try something a little different......

Im chuckling..... if he starts to rip off while I am chuckling then I am BLASTING him as hard as I can with a challenge and hoping for the best.

Will it work, who knows? Am I excited.... YEP!

Your first mistake (And we all make it at some time or another) was calling while out in the open. Anytime you call, you should have a setup location where they have to come looking for you. Or at least some sort background cover.

When he bugles, I\'m not overly concerned about what he is saying. (I don\'t speak elk and he doesn\'t speak English)!!! So the main thing he has done by bugling was to give me his location. Now I\'ll try to close the gap and get as close as possible and try to work him up and agitate him a little bit and see what kind of mood he is in. If I happen to think he might have cows, I\'ll just forget about bugling to him and start calling to his cows instead.

Think about it! If some dude starts sweet talk\'n you wife, what would you do or how would you react. I\'m betting this bull will do the same thing. So get ready, it\'s time to do this :mg: :mg: :mg: :mg: :mg:

Great advice, Bill!!!
People say it over and over, those elk can come in quick.
So why set yourself up in a situation that you cannot take advantage of it.

I have learned the hard way a few times now and called when I wasn\'t fully set up.

i mutter a quick prayer.

mostly to allow me to steady myself and get a grip..and say thanks.

then it is game on. find cover ASAP. anywhere..backtrack or go forward.
