What's the difference between all of the mouth diaphragm callers for elk?

I bought one from ebay and had it sent here to try on red deer, didn't work in the rut this year (but then again nothing did!) I've noticed though that there are lots of different kinds and I have no idea what the differences are, can anyone explain them to me?

Also any hints as how to get the cow call working really well? I've been playing with a few sounds but nothing has worked yet.

I do know they can work as I've seen it on a DVD and reds and elk to hybridize, especially in NZ where their entire wapiti (south pacific name for elk) population has interbred with red deer.

Cheers,

If your learning to use mouth calls for elk, I would use a single reed with a sound pallet. They are great for beginners and if you just wanna learn to cow call single reeds are just fine. As for red deer I have no clue.

Believe me fellas I've searched high and low for a caller specifically for red deer and they just don't exist. the only callin I do is mimicking a stags roar through a bit of polly, it works but I want to try something different.

I'm confdent it will work as I know they're happy to interbreed and a cow elk sounds very similar to a red deer hind so I think they could be fooled easy enough.

What's the difference between a single reed and a double reed caller?

Cheers

This is what I currently have

Just the number of layers of latex that is on the reed. Singles are usually for cows and you get up into the triples for bugles, chuckling  etc. There are a few different kinds but just to keep it simple single reed , in my opinion is a good dtarting point.
