When do you start sitting all day for deer?

Do you have a date that you start?
Do you wait until you start seeing deer in daylight?
Do you always hunt all day?
Do you wait until you start seeing some chasing?

Temps, wind direction, cloud cover and can I get into one of my all day sit stands that day. Of course temps and time of year have the biggest bearing on an all day sit. I don\'t wait for chasing, but it\'s likely to happen with the time frame. I don\'t have a certain date. I don\'t always sit all day. Sometimes I will hunt until noon or 1pm and get down and go to another stand with a favorable wind. I also like to get down, if action is slow and take a shot nap. It refreshes the body and mind.

Another thought... I have very few stands that are all day sit stands. The deer movements just doesn\'t have merit when it comes to an all day sit, so one could be an evening stand or morning stand. Honestly, I\'ve done maybe 10, \"ADS\" in my 24 years of bowhunting. Can they be good? You bet! I killed this buck in 2002 at almost dead noon...

Love your topics, Dan.

If it\'s rut time I\'m sitting all day. Early/late season I\'m sitting early morning and evenings. Last buck I killed was at 3:05 just after switching stands on 18 November.

this is a very very good picture.

back on topic. i\'ve never sat in a treestand ever..for a deer or anything.

if i did, i would stay all day.

I don\'t sit all day. In 38 years of deer hunting I have done 3 all day sits. Maybe if I was in better buck country I would.

While some of you guys may not have spots for all day sits, I do.

Obviously I am not hunting these areas unless the weather, wind, location or season is right.
These all day sit areas are generally high traffic areas or areas REAL close to doe bedding.

They become hot spots while the rut starts heating up.

For example, last year I had a spot that had bucks coming by my camera at 7-9AM, 11-1pm and 4-6pm. This went on for about a 9 day window.
This was safely located outside of doe bedding areas.

I was able to shoot my first buck in this spot because he was hot on a doe.

Next I had a spot that has multiple funnels leading to this transition area. It has LOTS of bucks crossing by my camera every hour throughout the day.
This was hot during the heat up to the rut.

Finally, the last reason I am hunting all day is for strategic move on a big buck.
As many of you know, the best time to kill a mature deer is the first time you get in after him. Because if anything goes wrong, he will change up patterns or go nocturnal so fast!

So there are times that I will know a buck is potentially going to hit an area, so I will get in super early and wait for that 30 second window of opportunity.

I actually had this happen last year, but I messed up and ended up missing a good buck.

Another big reason for an all day sit would be some feeding areas that we have where I hunt. Around mid to end of November, these food sources are getting grazed all day. So it doesn\'t hurt sitting off of them.

I love variety. I have early season spots, pre rut spots, rut spots, post rut spots, and mid day want to see some stuff moving spots.

Dan hit the nail on the head about mature deer and the best time to get them is the first time. Once they know you are there they are gone. Don\'t get big buy being dumb. Also like mentioned earlier pre-rut till the end of the rut is usually all day sits for me. I was hunting the same general area as Dan last year and around 3pm a massive 8 point walked in from behind me I had him in the corner of my eye and just as he was coming in front of me the worse thing happened. Wind hit the back of my neck... He was gone.... Never seen him again even on trail cams. All day sits will pay off if the timing and conditions are right.

Oddly enough I have never sat all day in a stand in 45 years of deer hunting. Virtually all of my hunting has been within 30 miles or less from home so it\'s easy to sneak out, take a short break, ( maybe I should take a shot break like Rick) and get back in again. I think I would have to shorten up my harness strap and catch a few Z\'s!

I have tried sitting all day for deer, but I dont have a comfortable enough stand to do that.
But if I had a comfortable stand, I would probably fall asleep and not see deer that come by!

So its a trade off :)
