Your choice for water purification in the backcountry?

Looking for a water purifier for a potential backcountry trip next year. I\'ve seen the Sawyers, steri-pens, pumps, etc. What are your preferences? High capacity and fairly light weight would be my first two concerns. I drink a LOT of water out in the field and would prefer something that can easily fill my Camelbak bladder.

I don\'t know which is the best, but the little pump apparatus, I borrowed from my son this year was no good. He fixed it and got it working later. In the meantime I was drinking from the creek. I guess it all worked out as I never got sick.

All you do is scoop water into the \'Dirty Bag\' and hook up the filter and hose and let it drain into the \'Clean Bag\'

4 Liters in 2.5 minutes

:upthumb: I will probably pick that up and a Sawyer since they are dirt cheap.

Steripen...90 seconds. :upthumb:

No pumping or draining...just fill your Nalgene bottle (the pre-filter fits into the open bottle)...stick the Steripen inside the bottle, and rock it around for 90 seconds.

I\'ve been using mine going on 4 years, without issue.

Best Wishes,
Jeff

I bought a Sawyer Mini for this year. Unfortunately I never got to try it out because of my knee replacement. Everything I have read about it is very positive. But in cold weather you might want to stick it in your shirt pocket to keep it from freezing.

Sawyer mini. No brainer.

Cheap, easy to use, small

If I am in an area with lots of water I put the filter and straw in my pocket and use it as needed. If it\'s a dry area I fill up the plastic bag with water. The plastic bags is almost weightless.

I used a Sawyer Mini this year backpacking in Colorado. I had to fill the little bag 4 times then squeeze it out through the filter into a Nalgene 1 liter bottle to fill it. I thought it was much lighter and worked great. I used a Katadyn Hiker before with no problems.

if you could have ONE, go with a pump. i like the Hiker Pro. light, fast and easy to maintain.

why? if you have a ready and accesible water source, a Sawyer or Steripen is good. but if you have to find water in seeps or cracks in rocks, you are gonna die and dehydrate away :).

i like the Steripen. i take it with me to 3rd world countries. they give me a glass of water..90 seconds. and i am fine to gulp. but that 90 seconds is forever in the woods, and you will need a nalgene bottle. so YMMV
