The \"What sign do you like the best?\" thread made me think a bit.
No \"sign\" will tell you elk will come back to THAT SPOT ... they\'re all just \"hints\" on the \"test\" ... not answers.
But there are some signs that are BAD ... no-doubt-about-it-bad.
What do you \"find\" or fail to find...
I\'ve got a pair of Miendel boots from Cabelas now ... and they are great for the heavy-duty stuff like scree fields, heavy backpack loads, etc.
I\'m thinking, though, of also taking along a lighter pair of soft \"hiker\" or \"walking\" shoes. Where I\'m planning on hunting, it\'s fairly gentle...
I know there\'s no great answer to this question, but I thought I\'d get some input from others.
I\'m sitting on 9 PPs in CO (for deer and elk) ... 10, once I purchase more this year ...
What do I do with them?
I\'m not a resident of Colorado. I am close, though, making scouting of northern...
September 2014 ... first morning out, I heard a bull bugling about a quarter-mile away at the same elevation I was at on a gentle north-facing slope.
Judging by repeated bugles about 5 minutes or less apart, he was headed uphill. We were near the top of the elevation already.
As I caught up to...
We\'ve all heard that bulls in September have two things on their minds: Fighting and ... breeding.
And our calling is based on getting these instincts riled-up, or getting them to come in out of curiosity.
Why do bulls decide to fight?
Describe the situation that is \"perfect\" for a...
Mid-September, archery hunt.
You hear a bull bugling from about 2 a.m., off and on ... it\'s now 4:30 a.m., and he\'s still sounding off about every 10-20 minutes. He\'s not far from camp. It\'s nearing the end of your vacation, and you\'re headed home the day after tomorrow.
What\'s your plan?
My first question had to do with how far most hunters go from the roads.
Here\'s another question, and a sub-question:
Do roads affect where elk call home?
Does distance from roads change your hunting style?
My answer: I think roads are one thing that affects where elk call home...
We all know that hunters start hunting from the road system, for the most part, and so most hunting activity is confined to areas near roads.
If we want to say that 80% of hunters venture only \"so far\" from roads, how far is \"so far\"?
(NOTE: I realize that often elk are found near roads...
I put some pronghorn carcasses out in the pasture ... with a camera on them ... for a couple weeks.
Cnelk and I took the camera down Friday night ... and there were NO photos of coyotes, but a lot of these guys. Then, this morning, my dog got to looking a the carcass pile, 175 yards from the...
OK ... I finally broke down and entered the 21st Century and got an iPhone.
What Aps do I need?
List your favorites, for hunting, camping, office ... whatever.
I was reading the F&S \"Tips for Elk Hunters\" ... as usual, I\'m always skeptical of Field and Stream ... not because they\'re not \"trustworthy\", but because their information always seems so basic. I seem to always say \"Duh\" to myself after reading \"Tips\" in magazines like that.
But...
Anyone got any tips to make things go smoothly?
Anything you have done to get better cuts, or make this chore less demanding?
(At our house, we generally process the animals ourselves -- there\'s a satisfaction in it, and a comfort knowing you have meat from THIS animal, and not someone...
I have always collected the \"inner loin\" or tenderloin from animals I\'ve killed, but ... frankly ... I\'ve been disappointed with them on the table. Mostly, here, I\'m talking about the smaller big game animals like deer and antelope. Elk have never let me down.
Mostly, because of the size...
I lost all my calls in August -- had to purchase some at the last minute this year.
This morning, working out, I was doing push-ups. \"Hey, what\'s that under that table?\"
You got it: the bag with all my calls.
Do you realize how long it is until archery season next year?
I am already:
1. Planning new scouting trips
2. Planning new practice regimens
3. Thinking of new arrows
4. New broadheads? (Nah ... them Viper tricks flat-out work!)
5. Oh, I\'ll need some new treestands
6. And new panniers...
Rifle season ... \"any elk\" ...
Heavily-pressured areas ... elk are not in their usual habits, but instead are pressured, running ...
You think to yourself that you have to just \"get lucky\" ... \"Be in the right place at the right time\" ...
How do you go about it?
What do you think...
