    Fire in WY

Went for a hike yesterday with Wife ... driving home, we came by this. Be careful out there ... this started near a popular camp area ...

    Messing with camp

Anyone ever had trouble with PEOPLE in your camp while you\'re gone? Theft, destruction, or just general trouble-making? How do you defend your stuff?

    Calling after the shot

John F recently posted advice to call after the shot. Can I hear more about that ... Both shots that hit and shots that miss?

    Happy Independence Day

Life\'s been busy, with the usual ups and downs ... but the good thing is that I\'m right here in the U.S. Happy Independence Day to all!

    WY preference points

Anyone thinking of applying in WY in the future might think about purchasing a preference point between now and (I think) September 30. You won\'t draw a tag here without points as a non-resident. <!-- m --><a class=\"postlink\" href=\"https://wgfd.wyo.gov/elsapplication/ELSWelcome.aspx\"...

    Sterile woods

Ask someone else where to find elk. Ask ME where NOT to find elk! I know! When I look at a map, it looks like 10s of thousands of acres of \"habitat\" ... but much of that is nothing of the sort. Mature woods often are mono-cultures of 1 particular species of tree. The floor is barren...

    Meat Grinder

I\'m thinking of a new meat grinder ... Cabelas has them on sale now, and I\'m sure other places have them, too. Looking for thoughts on size. I currently have a 0.5hp model that works well, but I\'d like an upgrade -- something that I could use to push meat through with less prep time...

    Vortex Rangefinder

Any experience out there with that model? -- I\'m looking for something with fairly decent optics since I tend to use my rangefinder as \"one-stop-shopping\" when looking for magnification. In other words, I use it as one might use binoculars when in thicker cover.

    Who\'s (not) shooting?

Anyone else been so busy they haven\'t done as much shooting as they like? Dang it, I need to shoot more. Rifles are still waiting quietly ... arrows need something to do, lately, too. I need to re-prioritize things a bit, I think. So many things sneak to the front of the \"Importance Line\"...

    Noontime contact

(Mid-September, archery season) You\'re back at camp from the morning hunt, and you\'re going to eat and tidy up camp a bit. As you\'re walking around, not 200 yards from camp across a small meadow, you see a cow slip into the trees, heading slightly away from you, down a creek bottom. She...

    Camping, Take 2

Last weekend, I was ready to camp, and then we had a major water leak in our house. We camped in the yard. Tonight ... we\'ll try again. Headed east of town after work for a moonlight horse ride on a full moon on Friday the 13th. Let\'s hope nothing spooky happens this time! Then, Saturday...

    Backyard Camping

Well, Wife and I were planning a camping trip tonight and tomorrow ... looks like we\'re going to get to do just that ... in our driveway. See, yesterday we packed up the camper and decided to go to a movie, then leave this morning ... But when we got back from the movie, we had about 1/2\" of...

    Odor control

Like wind control, odor control is important. Ever watch movies or TV shows about vikings, Romans, Native Americans, etc., and wonder: \"Gee, I bet they sure smelled like stink\"? Well, maybe they didn\'t: MORE ON THE MICROBIOME: A Hygiene Experiment. ?The tonic looks, feels and tastes like...

    A few bulls out today

Wife and I got out to look for sheds today ... found none, but came across 3 bulls, already showing some nice antler development. They were wandering off a south-facing slope around 11:15 a.m., aiming for water and a dark-timbered north-facing slope.

Elk Hunting Forum - Stopping after a startle

Here\'s what\'s going to happen this year to me: I\'m set up by a small pine tree and a young bull is coming in. He has heard me cow call, and I\'ve tried to \"throw\" the sound, but it\'s anybody\'s guess as to how much that fooled him. Then -- quicker than I expected -- I see antler tips...

    Training

For those interested, here\'s what I consider a great article about why strength is so much more important that \"cardio\" training ... and I think it\'s particularly adaptable to functional elk hunting fitness. <!-- m --><a class=\"postlink\"...

    high mpg car

Well, I MIGHT be in the market for a new vehicle ... using a diesel pickup for day-to-day use is not good for the pickup or my wallet, but I\'m not sure the math is going to work if I get a \"go-to-town\" car, either, once you factor in insurance, licensing, sales tax, maintenance, etc. BUT ...

    Garmin Birds Eye

Anyone use it? It\'d be nice to have on the the GPS so you could see terrain changes when in the trees ... like if you are looking for a particular opening, or for a way out of some trees you\'ve found yourself in.

    Turkeys in the rain

Well, it looks like this weekend is going to be wet in Nebraska. Anyone got tips on hunting turkeys when the weather forecast is for 90% chance of \"ice pellets\" and 23 mph wind?
