My DIY Idaho bull from this October in Idaho's unit 31 . My buddy and I both scored on bulls on that hunt . Good times !

Hatchet Jack was kind with his elk info once again which led to a beautiful Nwest Mt Bull :)

In deed it is for me this year....I filled both Idaho tags and this dandy bull in Montana for tag3. I figured at 50 this year it is all downhill from here:) my body paid for it with all the pakin and hiking having my knee drained once and another attempt as well..I am not complaining for sure and all DIY/OTC hunting and packing, elk antlers and elk just can't get enough! Luckily the wife and dog were still home when the season ended:)

J J  do you have a volume contract with your taxidermist ?, My wife gets a little bent cause I spend 1,000$ a year

Appreciate the laugh turbo ;)  out of state tags are expensive and if I mount whew yes another grand.....have 2 mounted and room for2-3 more....did not cape this one due to location and time, but just may buy a cape or use one from the 14 season as this Montana bull was special in many ways, stalk, location, view, culmination of season and number of days 2 get him off the mountain. Can't put a price tag on memories of this kind for sure!

Ya  J J its is odd , my wife will watch a 2 hour movie and I will watch my mounts on the wall for 2 hours , The memories are worth it all. It never gets old.

Well my elk season just ended for me with some ups and  downs.  We brought 2 out of 3 cows home. Which is a good thing meat wise. But I lost mine.  I thought I made a good shot on a cow, she went down right away with a shot from my 35 whelen. We went up to where she fell and found a large blood spot on the ground, about a foot in diameter and an imprint in the snow. Right then she jumped out of the brush and ran off. My father inlaw got a good look at her and saw a good patch of blood on her side as she ran by him. She dropped off in to a ditch and he never saw her come out.  We went over there and found a blood trail that I began to follow. I followed it for roughly 4 miles up a large ridge with hopes of finding her dead. I came to a large opening and spotted the herd bedded down in the middle of it.I walked over a quarter mile keeping a tree in front of me, until I ran out of trees. I was still out of range so I had no choice but to creep towards them. One cow watched me walk straight at them till I was about 200 yards away. A few of them got up so I sat down and got ready to shoot. They must have been as exhausted add me because they laid back down. I couldn't spot the wounded one with them laying down so I started whistling at them and talking to them. They did not want to get up.  A few minuets of taking to them and myself went by then I heard a truck coming, and do did they. They got up, but I still couldn't spot the wounded one. The truck got too close for comfort and they started to run.I spotted the one that was wounded but didn't want to risk hitting another one so I ddn't take another shot.  We saw them a few more times but never connected. It was a long day.

Cow down @ sunrise. Easiest elk hunt and recovery ever for me....
I was against the juniper on the left of low ridge, she was 20ft off the ranch rd.

There you go Hank.  It just can't get any easier than that for meat collection.  Dang, looks like my Toyota and camper in the first picture.

First post on the forum- thought I'd start with my first archery success from last September in NE Oregon.  Dream fulfilled and can't wait go for it again this next fall!

Almost just as exciting was on opening morning in SW Washington...I helped my best bud get his first elk.  Cool moment in the woods for sure.  Got him into elk hunting last year and it was an unproductive season.  He paid his dues, stayed committed and it paid off.  Proud hunting partner!
