2015 BTO Elk Contest :) Let the games begin!

I let my team down this year also. I should say I let myself down to. I made the trip back out by myself and my cousin and his wife got to camp Tuesday night. I arrived in camp Sunday morning and set up camp and went out hunting in the evening having not slept in two days and not eating good. My cousin went out in the morning and shot a nice 6/6 and I got to watch the whole thing from the other side of the valley. That was the high point of my trip. Packing out his elk about killed me as I was wore down and was cramping bad. My own fault.

Sorry this is jumping around. Only had three hours of sleep since I got home.

My hunt was really quite. I only had a spike and a yearling cow at 40 yards but in thick brush and one that was right at dark that I could not tell if it was a spike or a cow. Lots of spikes this year so you had to be carefull not to shoot one thinking it was a cow.

The bulls were really fired up three days before I got there then went quite and never fired back up.

I thought the last week the weather would be cooler but it was hotter then the the first short trip I had. I really think that had alot to do with the bulls being quite. There is not much water on the public land and alot on the private ranch and the hunters on the ranch hunting the ponds did really good on some nice bulls.

I saw elk glassing and tried to make things happen but trying to move in scrub oak is hard to do. I could never get in the right spot. If the cows would have been talking like they normally do it would have been easier but they were quite to.

It is all ways great to be in elk country even when things don\'t work out. I will be back out in elk country next year looking to do better. :upthumb:

I will update this here in a few minutes once I get settled in, but Team 3: Dirt Nap Donors(DND), also added some points.

Still close and still plenty of hunters left :D

Well I thought I\'d better post up some info. Start of the season started very quiet and finally got into bugling elk Sept 2-6th !! Then all the bugling came to an abrupt halt !!

I\'ve been pounding ground and still am (Sept 28th) covering ground looking for that bull that wants to play !! My planning is the second rut is right around the corner as Sept 6th was the last of the bugles I heard so if that was the rut then the second rut is upon use in the next couple days !!

I\'ll post again when I have my bull down !!

Trav

Team Wapinators has been suspiciously quiet, but watch out... I\'m a firm believer in come-from-behind underdogs!

My cow elk hunt isn\'t for another month, but here\'s a teaser from a scouting trip. I followed this little herd for about forty minutes, and was never more than 117 yards away. Hoping to get this close next month.

Meanwhile, congrats on all the successes so far! Plenty of full freezers this year. :D

Thanks, Dan and Jeff. But wait...last hope?? I sure hope not!
I couldn\'t help thinking of this Star Wars scene. Perhaps Jedi mind tricks work on elk...

Yes...try waving your hand at the herd bull and saying \"Those are not the cows you are looking for\"

Just got a call from Deertick on Team 2 with more points for them!!!
Waiting for pics to see how many points the rack has!

Wapinators, I had 4 days to fill a freezer and nab 3 points to put us on the scoreboard, but it just didn\'t happen.

Scout Day: Found a couple of good elk superhighways, heard and smelled elk
Hunt Day 1: Accidentally busted a herd at 50 yards (*facepalm*)
Hunt Day 2: Sneaky critters bedded down upwind within a 200 yards of us, surrounded by escape routes
Hunt Day 3: Almost had a chance at 130 yards in exact same spot
Hunt Day 4: A blizzard hit and the only things out and about were bachelor bulls and coyotes

At least we\'ll bring up the rear?
