Well, right now I have plenty of plans ... there will be adjustments over the first part of the year, I\'m sure, depending on the draw, etc.
August --- Archery pronghorn. I waited too long last year to shoot one and ended up having to go back with a rifle.
August --- Rifle cow elk. I want to get one on the ground before Labor Day. Sure would take the pressure off during the archery season.
September-- Archery elk ... hopefully, cnelk draws, but regardless, I\'m headed back for year number 4 to a special spot that I\'m finally learning well
October --- Perhaps a friend will bring his sons west for a rifle pronghorn hunt. If so, he\'ll pay a trespass fee for a ranch, and I\'ll go along to \"guide\". If not, then October will be an \"off\" month. Frankly, I put enough energy into archery elk that it does take the \"hunt\" out of me a little
November--- Rifle deer in Nebraska sandhills.
December--- Like a bull after the rut, I\'ll be eating and resting after a busy season
Going over maps of the area I hunt so when I put boots on the ground in late July I have a course ready. I am marking out what I have learned from past seasons, which is where other hunters are. I am taking a different approach to where I think the elk go when pressured. Already have a couple holes picked out but would like to add more.I want to hike away from the trailheads and main trails other hunters tend to stick to(something I have read Cnelk post before). A different approach to the same grounds that I feel will put me into the elk more often. So main plans are elk hunting September, running and gunning and still hunting when its needed. Something I want to try more of after listening to Still Hunter on this forum. Bowhunting for mule deer in October in the Badlands of ND. Then back to rifle hunting for WT and Mulies during November.
Hoping to kill a lion with my bow in the next few months (friend has dogs). That would be a great start to 2015!
BackTrack Pig Hunt?
Then I\'ve got a Nebraska turkey hunt planned with some BS guys for right after the PnY convention in AZ.
Colorado otc turkey after that
WY Pronghorn in August
CO Muley August-Sept
CO elk about 22 days in Sept even if I tag out on day 1
CO bear as soon as I\'ve got a nice bulls gut pile to sit on
IL whities in Nov
Sept. Archery Elk in a unit I know kinda well. I moved on from there a few years ago due to the pressure from the trail heads. However now that I\'m willing to setup a spike camp, I should be beyond most of the road hunters. The base camp area may be near where I saw those elk on GE.
Oct. Youth Outreach Doe Pronghorn hunt (CO)
Nov. Youth Outreach Cow Elk hunt (CO)
Dec. ES Rifle Plains Whitetail (CO)
However, deer may be up in the air. I have 10 CO Deer points and may opt to take a run and an RFW tag. Not sure yet.
Wow, some of you guys make me jealous (OTCWill). Living the dream for sure! Seriously though I can already feel the anticipation building. I have no idea where I\'ll be hunting this fall or who I will be hunting with (if anybody). I\'ve stepped up my workouts, my pack is up to 74lbs, my feet are a bloody mess right now so hopefully they are as tough as mule\'s feet come September. My bow is about to go in the shop for new strings and cables. Before long I\'ll order some more calls and start bugging the wife with my practicing (that\'s her favorite part!) It\'ll all come together sometime this summer and before you know it...I\'ll be in those mountains again.
