To clarify, there are five of us hunting, I don\'t have five tags personally.

Good start to the morning...

Well, just got back. We were supposed to hunt until tomorrow, but decided to come home a day early as my wife got a nasty flu bug and we had already punched three of the five tags. The doe in the picture is mine. I shot it first thing opening morning. She was running quartering away and I dropped her with my first shot  I\'m guessing that was exactly what I looked like when I saw it tumble. It was a pretty lucky shot. Unfortunately the area we hunt for this late season is very flat, so it\'s very difficult to get a good stalk on them, which means they are running a lot. Not a great shot opportunity, but it\'s why I still use my 300 RUM and 230 grain Berger\'s on them...you hit them and they will drop.

As a side note, I saw a tip last year after my antelope hunt that talked about shooting at something that was running, whether it\'s a coyote or anything else. The tip was to hold the crosshairs on the animal and follow it as it\'s running, then stop the gun for a second and see how far the animal runs in your scope. This shows you how much to lead them. I did this twice before taking the shot on that doe and it worked perfect!

All in all, it was a great trip. The other two who punched tags were both doing so for the first time on a big game animal, so it was great to share the experience with them. A little more meat for the freezer, although with the way my kids are eating my elk from this year, I\'m guessing it won\'t last long :D

Congrats on the hunt.

Thanks for the lead tip. I will have to try to remember that one. :upthumb:

Hahaha, something like that! Those things are so tough to hit when they are running full speed. But it\'s either that or a 600+ yard shot in the area we hunt. I tried to be prepared for both :D
