30 yds... whats next?

I agree with the quartering to shot but what if the bull steps to his left. Just wondering if anybody that would have been drawn already would make a cow call or something and try to get him to \"straighten\" up a little. I haven\'t been around elk so I\'m not sure how he would react to that, I think I could make a WT make that sort of move.

As a frontal-shot proponent, I\'d say \"no\" ... even if he turned full-frontal. Why?

Distance.

20 yards is pushing it, IMO, for this to be a high-percentage shot. 10-15 is more like it.

(Oh, now, if we\'re talking about lead and copper instead of fiberglass and steel, then it\'s a whole different game.)

The problem with this strategy is that you want a 30 yard frontal shot which is about two times too far IMO and you have now made him very alert. This would be a recipe for a lost bull.

I mean no disrespect when I say this, but everyone wants to sneak in these high risk shots when the responsible thing to do is sit tight and wait for a good shot. If you don\'t get a good shot, let him walk. He has beaten long odds to make it to be his age, give him the respect he deserves.

Personally, I have way more respect for the guy who passes on questionable shots and gets skunked than the guy who kills a monster but with a bad hit or high risk shot.

Exactly.

Thanks for the replies on the frontal shot. I put in the frontal comment because of a show I watched this weekend. Until last year, getting into elk hunting I had never considered something like that on a WT. I watched a show this weekend where a guy took a frontal shot on a bull at 42 yards. He was using a Rage. The bull was actually turned a bit. I will say the bull only went about 20 yards and bled a lot. At least that\'s the way the video was edited. I realize a lot of the hunting shows are really just paid promotionals for products. I mentioned the frontal to see what kind of response real hunters would give. As mentioned earlier, I\'m a broadside, quartering away fan. Just thought maybe this was a western hunter \"thing\" and a little more common. Guess it\'s probably more hype, just wanted to get it out of my head.
