WRONG! The lead cow dominates before the rut, during the rut, and after the rut. As a matter of fact, she dominates year around. She decides when and what bull will be allowed in the herd.

Re-read my post Bill. I was referring to one cow domination over another cow. I made no mention of a cow dominating over bulls.

I deduced that Steve thought cows dominate other cows only towards rut.

So I think we are more right then WRONG because we are essentially saying the same thing.

just like horses or any herd animal.... they could have been vying for last place!

Lol, they were actually fighting over my salt block. I was a nice hunter and dropped a few more so they wouldn\'t fight so much. Must be the \"father\" in me. I\'ll continue looking for the cow herds over the next couple months. The Bulls are in the high alpine areas right now and will come down. ;-)

I figured the cows dispersed during the calving season and reformed a herd. My knowledge is pretty limited. So the cow hierarchy is pretty much year round?

Most of the year they are herded up. I\'ve never studied them during calving season. Does someone have the answer to this?
